Lately my GLI has become a little bitch. In the past week I've had a TPMS light and TWO check engine lights. It's a 2012! it shouldn't be doing that!!!! I'm sick and tired of this thing thinking it's broken when it's actually not, and I abhor the fact I can't turn it's fucking TCS off, like in EVERY OTHER SPORTY CAR ON SALE SINCE 2002!!! Worst part is I can't do anything about it, because I can't afford to get fun parts for it and make it faster (dumping $725 on tires cleaned me out) and I can't trade it in for something more fun since it's in my mom's name!
I know I shouldn't be complaining about this car, I really shouldn't and most of the time it's great. My issue is that an 8 year older $7000 RX8 is a more fun car to drive, and I could have saved $14,000 that way. It's a quick car, but in contrast to other $20,000 used sporty cars? it's a joke...

Should've bought a brown Sportwagen TDI instead...
:P
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:36 |

lol , u mad bro? Jk. Sucks man. Probably all those 130 mph runs and stuff. At least you have the CPO warranty. Also Beetle Classic?
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:36 |

Did you buy the car yourself?
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:36 |

There are override mods for the TCS I believe...
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:37 |

should've bought a Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8, a 350z, an infiniti G35, a NEW v6 mustang....
instead

To turn TCS off, pull the fuse. I hate in-car nannies tbh, and I know my TDI has ESP with the ABS and TCS, but I'm unsure if I can disable it without pulling a fuse.

Heh. Score one for the vw haters.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:38 |

with money from my grandparents, that they gave to me to buy whichever car I wanted with, yes. but the car is in my mother's name, since I'm only 16.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:39 |

TPMS light is generally nothing, a decrease in temperature outside can cause tire pressure to differ enough to set the sensors off.
As for the check engine lights, what codes did it throw? Its a Mexican-built Volkswagen, its going to have issues. If I were you I would just drive it and enjoy it until you're old enough and wealthy enough to buy the car you want. This is coming from an almost-20 year old who tolerated the Kia Forte his parents bought him until he could afford what he wanted (Mercury Grand Marquis)
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:39 |
|
lol yeah, obviously. and no, not getting that. I want RWD, and I want to be able to turn the TCS off. so anything that's not a VW... this thing has ruined VW for me just a bit...
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:40 |
|
yup. cheapest one's $100, and since I can't do wiring, it'd be $350 to get installed, and that I can't afford.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:40 |
|
I'm pretty sure that'd void my warranty, and I want to have TCS, and be able to turn it off...
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:41 |
|
Nah, my Sportwagen has had only two problems it's whole life... the hatch mechanism and clear coat peeling off in some places (hood, small other places)
No check engine lights, no TPMS lights (except for when the tires are actually low)
As for the TCS? Pull the fuse or figure out how to swap out one of the blank switches to switch it on and off :)
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:41 |

That's the vdub life. Get a code scanner.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:42 |

I'd say be happy with it, and don't complain! (Like unless it explodes or some freaky shit) It's a nice car that you chose, and got for free all while 16.
I assume any repairs will be covered by your parents?
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:42 |
|
Yeah. Couldn't remember if you'd said something or not. Should have got a V8.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:43 |

that's what my parents say, but they didn't buy the car for me. My grandparents did, and they straight up said "money is yours, do what you want with it." I did that, got the VW, and now I dislike the VW, but am unable to sell it, since it isn't in my name, since minors aren't allowed t own cars (which is idiotic in my opinion. if you're old enough to have a driver's licenseo, a sports shooting license, and a boating license, you're old enough to own a car.)
I know I seem stuck up, but I don't want to own this car anymore....
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:46 |

lucky... my car's being annoying every 3-5 days about something...
I hope the engine blows while it's under warranty, so I can just unload it on some sucker and get something better....
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:48 |
|
It's common on many cars, usually it would void the warranty, depending on the company.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:48 |

Two CELs? This isn't helping with my belief that VWs are less reliable than we normally think.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:49 |

HA! no. anything goes wrong, I pay for it. the tires? my mom made me cover those, even though it's a safety item (she thought I had a lot of tread when in reality I had 2/32" left for the tire to become illegally warn out)
anything breaks I pay. that's why I want out now, so I can get something else I want, and not have a car depreciating at 1,000,000mph and no value at all in 12 months.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:50 |

couldn't have a fucking V8 because it'd be "too much"
I'm really starting to hate this car....

Lesson learned: buy a Datsun B210 for $3k, make it awesome with another 3-4k, and put $13,000 away for college (and impress your grandparents). OR, buy 10 to 15 Toyota Tercels

I think I didn't... I drove one after buying the GLI and it's better. I didn't drive enough cars before I bought it...
Coulda shoulda woulda
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:54 |

no, even the old 4.6. I couldn't, mom wouldn't let me... and I can't working on hella HW
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:55 |

yup. should have.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:55 |

![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:56 |

:( Too bad it is a VW, if it wasn't you could claim lemon law ;)
JK, I'm seriously happy with mine. You should buy some cheap GTI Detroits (18x7), convince your mom to sell the GLI with the GTI wheels, and buy a newer Golf TDI and do a GTD conversion on it ;) Stick a GTI bumper on it, get some lowering springs and sway bars, put on the GLI wheels, and get a DPF delete, EGR delete, GTI exhaust, and a Malone Stage 2 tune (180WHP and 300+ WTQ).
BOOM. PERFORMANCE CAR WITH NO PROBLEMS!
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:56 |
|
TPMS light is a life saver don't complain about it! If it got colder where you live you gotta put more air in your tires, thats just #science. Also its a new(ish) car, you have a warranty for the CEL's. Also also, no offense, its FWD … traction control isn't going to kill the fun you can have in it.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:56 |

no thanks, I want something quicker... another reason why this thing is annoying
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:58 |

Gotcha.
I'm not trying to be a dick, It may seem like it. But I'm not.
I bought my first car at 15 for $2,100 after working a year. It was a total hunk of shit, smelled like hell, drove like hell, and looked like hell. But I didn't complain. At all . Not once did I want to get rid of it, and I kept it for about 5 years. No matter how shit that car that car was I was just happy to have a running and driving car.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:58 |

Damn, that blows. Its a really good engine. My dads truck has ~120,000 with no issues with the engine.
Alright, but if you get the chance feel free to message.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:58 |
|
one word. money. I can't afford to do that much work on a car. if my mom would let me get a tune, I'd be more ok, but no it'd "make the car too fast." It's my car, and I should be able to do what I want with it right? nope! I can't even access the money I had left over (money I intended to use to mod my car) because it's in her account for "safe keeping" BULLSHIT. My family pisses me the fuck off sometimes.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 19:59 |
|
You did what many 16 year-olds would do (I made several bad auto-calls in high school), but remember to gut it out, and for the love of God have restraint to NOT complain to your parents or grandparents, because bottom line it you got a free late-model car and you don't want to look like a brat.
I in a massive blunder chose my brother's beaten Integra over a Legacy 5-speed wagon that probably would still be running today.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:00 |

I know that one of my friends has managed 118 in a base 2.5 2012 golf, I imagine yours must be able to hit 130 or more.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:00 |
|
no I know... It's just that the reason I got this car was it's modability, and I can't do that, since I don't have acess to the money I had left-over from the purchase of it, because my mom doesn't want me to work on my own car. Hell, she isn't even letting me do my own maintenance on it!
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:01 |
|
it can do 130 easily. but it can do 150 with a tune, Which I can't get, because my money is im my mom's account, and she refuses to transfer it over to me.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:02 |
|
Ok, thanks for understanding what I said.
Just try and stick with it, If it becomes too much to handle sell it. As a rule of thumb, it's a good idea that when you have a pretty good budget to work with to buy a car quite a bit cheaper than the budget and save money for performance goodies and repairs. (HNGHHHHHH, COVER ME IN APR.)
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:03 |
|
yeah... I complain because in the end the money to buy it was given to me to do with as I please, and the left-over money from buying the car is not in my possession, but my mom's and I can't use it as intended to mod my car.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:03 |
|
Its like MG and Alfa life but slightly cheaper!
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:04 |
|
Yeah...no. Have you actually checked what the cel were? And please...do not talk about it depreciating. I drive Saabs and they are the godfathers of losing value fast but I'm not complaining at all. My TCS cannot be shut off completely and I prefer that. I was 16 and made stupid decisions that the TCS saved my ass a few times.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:04 |
|
That's what I did. Had $27K to spend. spent $23K. intended to use $4K to mod...
mom: LOL Fuck you son!
I can't use the money, and she's not letting me use it for that, and gives me $200 (enough for gas per month) to use from it, which sucks.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:06 |
|
That's just fine. Like I said: you give me 20k as a 16 year old and I'm buying bean bag chairs, lava lamps, and low-mileage civic with Rimz that will probably get stolen from my driveway.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:07 |
|
Coming from a 17 year old who occasionally enjoys going a bit above the speed limit, isn't 130 good enough? 130 is pretty fucking fast. I know if I could go that fast in my car, even with 3 years of driving experience, I would most certainly kill myself by accident.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:07 |

It sure is.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:08 |

![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:10 |

Just remember, if you got the tune, the ECM would have to be removed from the engine bay and bench flashed... because Volkswagen!
Also, if you can get access to a lift, you can do basically any modifications you want!
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:12 |

![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:18 |

![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:18 |

tied up in bank...
and i can't because that'd set off such a shitstorm in my family, that i would probably wind up losing the car altogether.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:20 |

(call me a moron but...) no, it's not. When people around you get 545hp Foxbody Mustang GT's as their first cars, you have to complain about your 200HP GLI lol
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:25 |

Can't :( You would need a program to read the VAG encoding, then there is the matter of the software itself.

After having been nearly been in a pileup due to a friend in a 240 HP Dodge Ram, I tend to think that anything above 250 is too much for a new inexperienced driver. (Btw, here is the story of what happened with that if you are curious.) http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/story-time-cra…
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:32 |

I hate to say it, but didn't we all kinda like warn you about this when you were asking for advice?
I know I suggested staying cheap and getting a cheap sports car like a Miata and putting aside the rest of the money (I think I intended for the money to be saved, but some of it could have gone towards mods)
That being said, it sounds like all your issues are things you would have/should have known about when you bought the car. It's a VW, they aren't exactly known for reliability, and you should have known you couldn't disable traction control, especially since that's one of the biggest complaints people have with the GTI/GLI
What I'm trying to say is sorry I'm not sorry. While I can empathize, I don't really have much sympathy. Enjoy the fact that you have a basically new car without having to make payments on it until you save enough money to get something else
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:33 |

130 isn't good enough??? How often do you go 130?? My FoST can go 155 stock, what's the fastest I've gone? 140mph. How many times have I done this? Twice.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:35 |

You could have gotten a decent C6 Corvette for that, or a C5Z with plenty of extra money, or a base/Z51 C5 with lots of extra money...
Why would you want a V6 Mustang? I bet you your GLI is much better to drive than a V6 Mustang...
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:36 |

Should have bought a Cobalt SS. Or something other than a used performance-oriented VW.
It sucks that it's So problematic, but when a 2012 is on a used lot already, there must be problems.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 20:49 |

Or a C5Z, or Evo, or R32 GTR

You're welcome.
As for the weirdness in reliability, you bought a VW. As much as I love VAG, it kind of comes with the territory.
I had a similar feeling after I got my Wrangler. It was a 2010 and was having some problems. No warranty, so I was on the hook for all of it. I ironed out all the kinks and now it runs like a dream, but now I HAVE to sell it. I want to keep it, but I just can't and it sucks. Just appreciate your car, man. You won't be able to get what you want if you sell it and then you have to downgrade to something that's older, slower, or actually less reliable. You mentioned an RX8... Do you know what happens to those engines if they aren't properly taken care of? They pop. Unless you can count on the previous owner to have taken care of it religiously (which you can't. Ever), an RX8 is not something to consider if you're annoyed that the lights on your dash are blinking when nothing is actually wrong. Just my $.02.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:15 |

heh, mom will pull the "you're irresponsible" card. I might be able to get something else though.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:16 |

But 110 is easy, I can do that any time I want and I live close to a freeway. How often do you expect to go that fast?? Even in the winter, provided that there's ice and snow??
How am I supposed to sick the Rozzers on you anyways?
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:17 |

Fair nuff, It is a pretty quick car to start with though.
Maybe some different wheels, or coilovers?

Counter-argument.
19 year-old me in a 252hp FoST, who's been driving for only 2 years, but I've been doing quite good so far. Try teenagers with 350hp+ RWD Mustangs and such; they're the one's that'll screw you over. Not all of them though, SOME of us can handle the power, some of us can't; but we can't all be generalized as such.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:20 |
|
Just....get over it. Sorry. I've read through all the comments here and I'm sorry to be a dick, but suck it up. You had a ridiculous amount of money for a 16 year old to spend on a brand new car. You chose this car and should have known the possible reliability problems before you purchased a VW. If you bought it not knowing little things such as not being able to turn off TCS (which I even knew and I don't follow VW at all), you didn't fully research this car.
I also can't imagine that this car isn't fast enough for you. How fast do you really need to be going on public roads? "I exceeded 110MPH six times last night alone. I've hit the 130MPH limiter twice in 3 months." You're 16 years old and you sound like a real asshat driver. You sure as shit don't need to be going even faster . I've been driving a hell of a lot longer than you and I've only hit 100 mph two times. Once on a track.
Again, I'm sorry to be a dick but if there's one thing I cannot stand, it's spoiled teenagers and that's how you're coming across. You want to complain about a car? Get a job, save your money and buy a car with your own hard earned cash. When that thing breaks down or gives you trouble, then you can complain.
I have no sympathy for you.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:31 |
|
You could get an 06 or newer vette for less than $27k.
I'm not saying a 16 yo should, but I'm also certain that a 16 y/0 doesn't need to disable traction control in his Jetta.
I know I've said this to you and other kids on here before, but have some fucking appreciation for how great your situation is. Whining about a free newish car when you're 16 is ridiculous. Next time you want to rant about how much you like your car step back and say to yourself 'I'm a 16 y/o kid with a car of my own and little financial responsibility. Life is good. I'll get a job/go to school/get another job and save up for that RWD sports car I always wanted'
Do you know how happy I would have been to have any car of my own at your age? And do you have any idea how nice it would be to not make car payments now as an adult?!
We all think about what else we could have and what we should have done, but it's pointless: enjoy the moment, learn from your past, plan for your future. That's all any of us can do. I can bitch and moan every day about how if I had only not bought a brand new car fresh out of college I could have a C6Z by now, but that doesn't change the fact that I don't have one and it'll be some time before I can even get a C5 Corvette. Instead of whining about it I think about where I am, take pride in my career and my comfortable living, and focus on planning for my future. I recommend you try to do the same, you might find yourself in a much happier place if you do.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:42 |

Dude, not trying to be a dick, but I think you just said why you're having CELs. Seriously there's a fucking reason youre having issues.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 21:51 |
|
Please tell me that was on a track. It's not like I stick precisely to the speed limit 100% of the time, but there is absolutely no excuse for driving at that kind of speed on public roads. None. Whatsoever. End of story.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:02 |
|
... I know there are other people who say "not trying to be a dick", but I will be a dick: are you a fucking dumbass? Do you not understand the problems with what you're doing? There is no way you can drive that speed safely and without endangering yourself and everyone else around you. What happens if an animal pops out? Or another vehicle? Fuck the cops (as someone who is planning on becoming one), have you truly considered the consequences of your actions?
Before you bullshit me with "but they're deserted roads at midnight": fuck that noise. All it takes is for the road to not be deserted once for lives to be ruined. Think next time you want to do that.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:18 |

Damn right she shouldn't let you have the money, if that's what you're going to spend it on.
Seriously, I realise that you appreciate the privileged position that you are in for being able to buy a nearly-new performance car at your age. But if you're doing speeds like that on public roads, I hope that you get caught and lose your license before you cause anybody any harm.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:29 |

He's either going to lose his license, go to jail, or die driving like that. It honestly pisses me off hearing him talk, no, brag, about his high speed driving. Fuck that shit.
Dumbass teenagers. I hope he gets caught and has his license revoked.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:33 |

It's a performance sedan it should be able to take being driven hard without problem. You never hear about STs or Miatas having problems after being driven hard.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:42 |

Going 110, you kinda can get into a lot of trouble. One of my friends nearly lost his license for going 88 in a Honda Element. (He did not travel through time)

![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:46 |

I've been driving for about 10 years now.
1. I was never given money to buy a car, worked hard and still drive a cheap car.
2. Never have gone over 90 mph on a public road.
3. Was grateful for what I had.
![]() 11/09/2014 at 22:47 |

It's possible to drive like an idiot in any car – I managed to do some incredibly stupid things in the Triumph 2500 that I had as a teenager, with boat-like suspension and all of 100hp. But giving an immature, inexperienced driver a powerful car only makes matters worse.
The idea that anybody would consider those kinds of speeds acceptable on the road just boggles the mind. And even so, aside from the allure of its riskiness, speed is boring – it's acceleration, cornering and braking that make things exciting.

I've been driving for eight years and it's nearly the same story.
1. Also never given money to buy a car. Worked my ass off for every one I've owned.
2. Went 100 once on the interstate to get out of a road rage situation. Took the closest exit I could find and hid at a gas station haha
3. Was always grateful for what I had. My parents gave me a '01 Grand Cherokee when I turned 16. Was it fast? Fuck no. Sporty? Haha, ya right. Did my friends have nicer/faster/cooler cars? You bet. Did I complain? Shit no I didn't. My car was my freedom and that's all I needed.
Kids these days...

Trust me man, I've told him. I've told him one day its not gonna be good. There's a reason for racing circuits and HPDE things.

All of the above, here, too. When I got tired of borrowing my family's beat-up Triumph 2500 (which, admittedly, they did keep around so that my brother and I could drive it), I saved up and bought a beat-up car of my own.
It's a different world, I guess, but I simply cannot fathom the idea of a 16-year-old getting 26K cash to buy a car. Heck, even my relatively-well-off parents have never paid more than 10K for a car.
And putting a 16-year-old kid behind the wheel of a powerful car is just asking for trouble. I think that, even with modern electronic nannies, it takes a fair bit of maturity to drive something that is easily capable of massively illegal speeds, and it's pretty obvious that he lacks it. I certainly did at that age, and I'm glad that I had nothing more potent at my disposal than an asthmatic Triumph 2500 (in which I still got up to plenty of shenanigans), and a hateful Renault minivan that was almost entirely incapable of exceeding the speed limit.

I'm trying to not be a dick, but I'm finding it hard to feel any sympathy. Like he's driving it with no respect for anybody else on the road, Complaining about a free expensive car that he picked out and Wants to get a performance chip but his parents won't let him. Like I just don't understand it. Not at all.

Not all of are like this. I know it's stupid. I think the fastest I've gone is 70 on the highway which is only like 5 over. Granted if I ever wanted to go fast there are like 5 major racing tracks near me. Growing up around racing I know how fast things can go wrong.
I've told him to be a bit more responsible but he doesn't exactly listen to me.
I also don't have a car of my own and only like $2500, $500 is mine and $2k my grandparents saved for me.

I'm past the point of worrying about being a dick. I'm straight up being a dick and I don't even feel bad. I'm surprised he hasn't dismissed my very first comment yet.

Also, thinking it over, I wish I could remove that comment about my friend doing 118 in a golf, because looking back, I feel as if my writing seemed to be encouraging you to speed that fast. As others have said, It is only a matter of time before that deserted road is not as deserted as you think. The end result of going 130 on public roads could be very similar to what happened to the owner of this red Jetta.

I'm pretty close to just being a flat out dick. What I'm surprised is that he hasn't crashed his little present yet going 130 on a public road.

You should've bought a used shit-box if you wanted to drive at speed:

You bought something that society approves of, instead. Deal with it.
