T21 - 750MHz PIII, 256mb RAM, XGA, S3 Savage IX8, 40GB HD, Windows 95/NT4

Runs pretty well but it has a few cosmetic issues. Mainly the right side of the keyboard bezel is loose so I duct taped it back and used a Sharpie... :P I keep it around just for legacy software purposes. Love me some Chip's Challenge. Was free, my uncle gave it to me.

Dell Latitude D830 - C2D T7500, 3GB RAM, 128mb NVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M, 1920x1200, 100GB 7200RPM, XP Pro

I picked this sucker up for $50 online. And it runs like a charm. It didn't come with an HD and only 1GB RAM but I had spare RAM and HD. It just needs a wireless N card, so I ordered one for $3. \o/

HP ENVY 15 - i7 4700MQ, 16GB RAM, 2GB NVIDIA GT740M, FHD, 512GB Crucial MX100 SSD, 7-64

I use this for my work + school, so it does most of my video editing, graphics, games, etc.

The best part is that Lenovo will still be running when the other two are dead in the ground.

Dat T21

I still have my T22, my first laptop. Still works great, I keep Ubuntu Studio on it. Used it for audio work, be it a Synth or a noise generator for EQing auditoriums.

That Envy, theyre actually pretty fragile. The hinge design cant take much of a beating, and parts arent super cheap or easy to find either.

The Dell is probably the most durable laptop design out of the bunch though. Very rarely see those broken anywhere.

I wouldn't count on it; the Dell Latitude D8 series is equal to contemporary IBM/Lenovos.

Damn, Nibby. People will be coming to you in twenty years like you had '56 Ford parts today.

The Envy is still the best consumer grade laptop in terms of build quality I've had. The Dell and ThinkPads are business grade.

You should take this POS HP off my hands. I'm just about to throw it away, but I'm sure there are some things you can take from it.

No idea. Hinge destroyed everything around it. Pretty sure the screen no longer works. Been about a year since I got it working again.

Those are some nice machines! It reminds me a bit of my (portable) machines:

Kinja'd!!!

From new to old:

Lenovo W530: Core i7 3720QM, 8 GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 2GB NVIDIA Quadro K2000M, Windows 7 Pro, my main laptop, used a fair amount for CAD (Pro-E, Creo, Solidworks)

Dell Inspiron E1505: Core 2 Duo T5500, 1 GB RAM, 128mb ATI Radeon X1300, Windows XP Pro, was my main laptop from 2006 to 2012, now used mainly for older networked gaming with friends (Age of Empires I and II)

Apple iBook G4: PowerPC G4, 512mb RAM, 32mb ATI Radeon 9200, OS X 10.4 received for free, mostly used for internet browsing.

Apple PowerBook G3: PowerPC G3, 128mb RAM, 8mb ATI Rage Mobility 128, OS 9.2.2, I don't really use this one, but it was free.

Kinja'd!!!

I have two of both Apple laptops, and may be getting a free Dell Inspiron 6000 soon (when my dad finally gets around to upgrading). On that note, I may also be upgrading to a W540, and giving my dad my W530.

Wonderful! Also, I would suggest skipping the W540 cause they fucked up the trackpad and it's not built as well as the W530. I had a W530 and got rid of it cause I hated that 170W brick.

I've been really happy with my W530 overall. The 170W brick hasn't bothered me yet.

I've been hearing that the W540 has been getting mixed reviews. I don't think the early production issues helped any. It seems like the issues from the keyboard and trackpad have been fixed from an operational standpoint. It is annoying that they seemed to skimp out on the little details, too, such as removing the wifi and hdd status lights.

The funny thing is that I seem to remember the big fuss over the keyboard change in from the W520 to the W530. Having not owned a Thinkpad before then, the keyboard change never really bothered me (except for not having the blue enter key). Now most people seem to like the keyboard on the W530. Granted, the trackpad seems like a bigger change, but I wonder how much of a fuck up it really is or if it's just different.

I wish there was a way to give the W540 a try without committing. I'm not going to be in the market for a bit anyway (probably spring 2015), so I'll wait and see if anything better comes out from Lenovo or otherwise. I may take a look at what Dell is offering in the Precision line, too. I've had good luck with Dell in the past (1 laptop, 3 desktops, all still working well).

By Spring, maybe they'll have W550 out due to Broadwell. Hopefully. Wait for that.

The older layout was 48924327489372x better and is the best laptop keyboard ever. That said, the current ThinkPad layout still is one of the best in the business.
