For those in the know, does the new Chase format really just come down to whoever finished best in the last race out of the four remaining cars? I guess I didn't learn enough about it when they announced the new system. I realized drivers would be eliminated, but I missed the part about resetting the points at every elimination. I figured drivers would be able to carry some advantage into following round based on previous performance. This makes the whole thing turn into a 4-car / 1-race season basically. I'm not diggin' it.

It, like a lot in racing, comes down to luck.

Yup. That's what happens

The Chase for the Cup is actually decided by points earned in the post-race brawls. Which currently puts Keslowski in the lead.

I don't like it because it takes away being consistent all year. They are pushing wins as the only thing that matters.

Yes, and I think this format swings the pendulum too far toward luck (out of hope to create some exciting mini-events along the way I suspect), and takes away too much from a driver's sustained show of success and effort. I'd like more balance.

Uh, pretty much I think. Those top 4 get overall reset to like 4000 points. SO yeah theoretically you could finish 39th and win the title.

So succinct. I should work on that.

I know right? It is so annoying. I'm a big Earnhardt Jr. fan, and a solid season overall just goes down the drain because he has his typical late season luck (lack therof). I've heard (haven't calculated it myself because I have better things to do), that Dale Jr. would have won last years championship if they would have just left things as they were.

What's dumb is that parity being what it is in the sport right now just as many, if not a couple more would be mathematically in the hunt. WITHOUT the chase.

Right, but even the wins don't matter. Many of the winningest drivers are gone or doomed to be gone, and Ryan Newman could take the Cup without a single win. I'd like more of a balance. Driver's should be able to carry some points advantage into later rounds based on earlier season success, even if it's minimal.

I wish your total number of wins still gave you a points advantage after the reset. Maybe 4,000 + 2 points per win, or something like that. Maybe 3. Two seems about right. It would give Logano (5 wins) a 10 point advantage over Newman (zero wins), for example.

he would have won last year if they used this years format. This win and in thing is stupid because you get a car like AJ allmendinger that's in a car that is basically filler for every race except the road courses and he makes the chase only to use a space and then drop after 3 races. That's just dumb

I hope Newman can somehow do it.nascar would lose its mind to see a no win driver win the championship in their you must win chase

I'd be ok with that. I'm all for upheaval. Otherwise I guess I'd like to see Logano win. I don't really have a horse in the race.

Agreed. Completely. Oh well. Go Chevy drivers that remain. I'll just remember the parts of the season I care about anyway.

Harsh but fair. Luck is important, he didn't have it. I would also say that he wasn't quite right after he had that fiery crash driving the C5R. He's back to what he was these past few seasons, but this year he found victory lane.

i guess my excitement didn't come through, I'm a huge earnhardt fan. I preferred SR but have was always a JR fan. I agree the Corvette crash shook him up. I give credit for his change to Letarte and his gf. They seem to have gotten him to shake the burden of being in SRs shadow.
