With the FoST, I have one key to do everything; with the 944, I've got three, minus the spare. Each one has it's own specific uses, which I will share with you today. :)
So let's get started with the main key:
I've got two of these, the primary and spare; the first thing it can do, is usually the first thing I do: To open the hatch!
Just stick it in the slot underneath the spoiler, twist to the right, and lift up on the spoiler and ze hatch will open. :)
This key also serves a purpose for getting gas. I'd never seen it on any car before this one, but the gas cap features a locking system:
(I love the little gas flap, not sure why, but I think it helps keep the paint clean from gas when I remove the nozzle)
Another simple process; insert key and twist to the left to unlock, then unscrew and remove the cap, and do the reverse to lock it.
And then of course, I use this key to unlock the doors, and start her up!
(You can see my weird aftermarket cruise control toggle behind the key)
On to the secondary key, this one!
This one locks and unlocks the glove box, but how do you do that to a glove box that looks like this?
Simple! You flip up the Porsche crest on the mechanism, and there's your keyhole:
Just like the gas cap, righty tighty to lock, and lefty loosy to unlock, and pull the taps on both sides to open then compartment!
The final, tertiary key, is this very small key:
I'm not sure if this was a standard feature at the time, but my '84 has wheel locks, the little black tube over one of the lug nuts on all four wheels:
(Yes, my wheels need some serious reconditioning and restoration..)
Simply remove the cap on the lock, insert key, and right to lock, and left to unlock and remove the lock and remove the wheels!
Hope you all enjoyed this informative post about keys. :p

I have three for my MR2 as well. One is for the ignition, one is for the door locks, and one is for the trunk. I'm not sure which (if any) came with the car originally.

Door/Ignition/Security/gas cap, wheel lock, and glove box?

I'm snickering so much. The key is identical to the one my VW had, just embossed Porsche instead of pressed through to a VW in the metal. The gas cap was the same too, but I didn't have a drip shield and the cap was black. That glove box latch is identical to the VW, even, just with the Porsche shield added.

Here I always thought the 944 has just a normal pull style handle. Not this weird thing.

It's a VW part.

Aren't there a lot of things on the 944 that are VW parts with Porsche branding?

We used to have a Taurus with a key that could open the trunk and doors, but not the ignition, and a key that would do the ignition and doors but not the trunk. It was weird.

Yes, quite a few. To wit, just from this set of pics - the key, the glovebox latch, possibly the glovebox lid, the locking gas cap, the gas cap cover...

From right to left, yes. But switch glove box, and wheel lock.

I cheated. I've had an '84 and an '86 so I kinda knew. I just didn't put them in order of the pic.

Most Porsche cars from this era have this kind of door handle. The 911 had it from 1963 all the way to the 993 in 1998.

Parts-bin ALL THE THINGS. At least they parts-binned mostly from one source (read: the Golf).

How was your experience with the '84 and '86?

The '86 seemed to be quicker and handle better. I probably spent more money on the '86 to be honest though as I was older and took better care of it. I traded the '84 off for a truck to pull a boat that I had bought and about a year later bought the 86. I owned the 86 a lot longer than the 84, which is probably why I spent more on it as well.

Man, I want a fuel filler paint protector flap dealie so bad. I'm always that guy at the gas station jiggling the nozzle in the filler to shake off the last drops of gas so they don't drip on the paint when removing the nozzle. Then a damn drop of gas still drips on the paint so I grab a paper towel and dunk it in the windshield squeegee liquid to quickly clean up the gas.
miadaman? yes please

Ignition and trunk is probably a valet key. Door and trunk is probably a key for your significant other that can't drive.

Never realized how many quirky/cool things there were on a 944. Especially that gas cap. I've never seen anything like that before.

I just yank it out of the gas cap as quick as possible to get the drips away and not hit myself or the car at the same time; it usually works successfully.

I also do the quick fuel nozzle yank, but I need to perfect my technique since I still get the occasional drip.

Definitely cool, no doubt! That glovebox keyhole is especially awesome. Kind of jealous about that.

I also have 4 keys. For a Ranger that is nowhere near as awesome as a 944.
Entry, ignition, and gas, and a paddlock key for the toolbox.

My 740's handle is like that, too.
