I've been pondering building a custom-bodied art-deco roadster for a while now. One of the sticking points has been what to use as the basis as I'm not a good enough welder to safely fabricate my own frame.
I just found this rolling Shelby Cobra replica chassis on Craigslist for $550. It has front & rear suspension already installed. Hell I might be able to use the body shell for the floors & firewall and save some work there.
How the hell would I get half a cobra from PA to RI though?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
EDIT: it just occurred to me how hilariously sacrilegious it would be to put an inline 6 engine in a cobra chassis. Even better, use a Nissan OHC inline...

rent a trailer or pay out the wazoo and have it shipped

Shipping from PA to RI would likely be less than $800.

Yeah, that is top of the list, though it also involves buying a hitch & wiring. And I'm vaguely terrified at how much gas that round trip will burn.

Might actually be cheaper to get a rolling chassis of something else closer. The only big advantage here is less to remove, and possibly a better lightweight chassis as a starting point than most.

If my magnum wasn't in the shop and I had a tow hook I would offer to at least run out and look at it for you (in northern NJ myself), unfortunately, still waiting for the car....

I haven't been able to come up with any other ideas for a chassis that would be a good starting point without a lot of reworking.
S1o/ranger are too tall and would need the all the pedals/column/etc. moved back.
Miata would need the front suspension moved forward & smaller coilovers fitted to get the look right
240/260/280z are too expensive in their own right for a solid enough example.
Cobra was not something I thought of before, but it hits a lot of the points I need. 1)self-contained chassis and not unibody 2) long hood, with passenger compartment right back by the rear axle 3) low front suspension profile to fit under pontoon fenders 4) radiator at/behind front suspension to allow for accurate looking 30's style nose.

Sounds like you're in business, then. UHaul, away!

Amusingly I will be in northern NJ this weekend for unrelated reasons, so if the guy replies I might be able to go look at it.

No way, I'm only about 45 minutes from there!

Cool! Unfortunately I'm massively overbooked for the weekend already. If I am dumb enough to buy this thing maybe we can hang out when I come back down to pick it up.

Keep me posted if that's the case!
