Why I Love The Toyota Celica

If you ask me what my favorite car of all time is, I would most definitely say it's a Toyota Celica. Not the rally-spec GT-Four models, but the simpler GT models. Growing up, my dad owned two: a red 1986 GT liftback (Like the one pictured above), and a silver 2001 GT. When I was a little boy, I idolized these cars.

When we moved from Seattle to Sacramento, my dad insisted on driving the '86 the full 800 miles, and he did. One christmas, he invited some family from Washington over, but this was during the Y2K scare, so he insisted on diving the '86 the full 800 miles up (in one day), then the full 800 miles down (in one day). In a little 1986 Celica. When he came to get rid of it, it had over 200,000 miles on it, and still hardly broken in!

When he got rid of the '86, he got an '01 GT, similar to the one pictured. With it, we would make trips up to Seattle and back down like we did with the '86. These were also one-day trips. Imagine taking a Celica long distances like that in one day. The time I spent in these cars, and the relationship I had made with them defined my childhood. I'm also right in saying that it's the biggest reason why I'm into cars today.

Right now, we own no Celicas, and I drive an Accord. Let me tell you this, though: I'd rather have a Celica than a Ferrari or Lamborghini or Koenigsegg or McLaren or any high-end supercar, and I'm not joking. The glamor and exclusivity in a supercar is brilliant, and power is nice too, but it really can't compare with how the Celica makes me feel inside. Today, whenever I see a Celica, all of a sudden I'm taken back to the days when I had a beautiful Celica in the driveway to look at, and all those amazing road trips with my dad in them. This is something I could never experience in any other car.

I like most cars, but the Celica is special to me. I'm heartbroken that it has to continue on as a slushy Scion tC, but I guess that's how it has to be.

My mom had an 86 liftback that she bought from a man who imported with him from germany when he moved here.

The stickers were a miriad of german and japanese, but unfortunately she drove it into a ditch.

I never liked the looks of the 2001 Celica. I always thought it should look more like this:

My dad drove me home from the hospital when I was born in an red 88 supra. Sold it all original for 3.5 grand in 2010 267k miles running beautifully aside from AC that what disabled a long time ago because it drained the battery and wastes fuel anyway

They should have just continued it's rally heritage, then it might still be a thing today.

Today, when I dropped a kid off at daycare, in the lot was a Celica AWD turbo. White with White Sparcos. Someone is getting a ride to school and getting their life defined by a defining Celica.

The first car I loved was a red 1990 Celica GT. Slid her through a fence at 140, and then patched it all up and she was right as rain!

I think it's pretty cool that the high-spec FWD ones from the generation of the main picture had 4AGE's
