...is almost at 200,000 miles... I had no idea there were that many miles on it, but I happened to look over my mom's shoulder when we were going home today, and the odo read 199,787 mi. I think it had 175K when he bought it about three years ago used. It's an '01 V70. Says who Ford-era Volvos aren't durable...

I have always liked that gen V70, especially the post face lift with these rims.

Agreed, my dad's is elegant but the black door and bumper trim is just...too practical...

I wish, but I'm prob getting my grandma's 2010 Civic EX-L...since I was in kindergarten she said she would give me her car, and she used to have a 2002 Maxima GLE (slightly more desirable) before she rear-ended it...

Hah, I would but I don't like that boy racer feel...that's why I'm such a Volvo fanboy (yes, I know that they have rice too, but it's not as...obvious to the outside world...). She wants to get a CR-V after she pawns off the Civic to me, which might not be a bad choice considering its relative power and space (she's an artist and always has to haul around her paintings, making life in a Civic very interesting sometimes...)

oh, ok, makes sense then!
And on the Si boy racer note? I drive a GLI as you know, and after buying it, I drove a base Si, and since then, regret my GLI just a teeny tiny bit...
To drive, the Civic is immaculately perfect. to look at? not so much...

ok, as a non-driver I'll have to take your word for it! I enjoy the look and feel of understated Swedes since I was literally brought home when I was born in a Volvo but I have no idea how any car drives yet...

Auto or manual? I've heard that the 5-speed automatics in that generation were somewhat trouble-prone, but my parents had an '01 XC70 that never gave any grief.

The 5-cylinder engine is remarkably durable for a high-tech, high-specific-output engine. It's pretty much the same one as my 850R, and that's got 213,000 on the clock and although it leaks a bit of oil and the turbocharger sounds a little bit tired, it still pulls like a train. That said, it was an absolute pig to start this morning, so maybe there are still things that can go wrong...

It's an auto, and the transmission has never been a trouble point.

When he first got it though for like $4500, he had to do the usual "replace everything in the front around the wheels" for these cars since he got weird scraping sounds in the front but since then the only time we've had trouble was when I went to the eye doctor and my dad came but the V70 had a clogged fuel filter so it wouldn't start...just this past week though he had to have the mass air sensor changed to pass CA Emissions Testing, but other than that it's been fine...I'm a bit worried about the turbo though since he uses it as his DD and it takes a lot of stop/go expressway driving...

Good to know – I'd like to one day own a V70R or T5 of that generation, so it's good to hear that they're not ALL disasters waiting to happen.

My 850R had weird scraping sounds from the front, too, but it turned out to just be a bent heat shield touching the edge of the brake disc. A few whacks with a hammer, and it's been fine since – free fixes are the best fixes.

I really wouldn't worry about the turbocharger – in stop-go driving, it'll be spinning relatively slowly and probably not even reaching boost very often. What kills them is accelerating hard when cold (a bad idea in any car, turbocharged or not), and not giving the turbocharger time to spin down before shutting the engine off (all you need to do is avoid hard acceleration for the last few minutes of driving, otherwise, idle for a minute or two before shutting it off).

Yeah, I really have to remind him to let it idle before shut-down...but the last part of the drive is residential, so it should be ok...

I understand that the transmissions were an issue on the XC70's up until about 2003, or so - then they got it sorted out. Of course, this does not apply to all cars, as you stated your 01 had no issues. I have an '04 and I'm looking to keep it until 200K and then evaluat my options (got 123K on it, now....)....one of which is: XC70R with a 6-speed...but that might be a labor/cost of love more than anything....

Really? In my opinion, the '15 Civic Si is one of the best looking cars on the market and probably the best looking at the price point.

looks are in the eye of the beholder. I find the pre-facelift GLI's to be the best-looking compact sporty cars, both inside and out.

I'm not saying that the civic doesn't look good, in fact I'd say the Si coupe is leagues better looking than the FoST and the WRX, but it has that negative image that it just can't shake. That's why I chose the GLI. It has an air of sophistication about it. Also, around here, it is mostly driven by sporty, young, female professionals.
