Not sure if you guys know this, but there was a novel written for the first series. It was written alongside the tv series, and was completed before the tv series was finished, thus why the ending is so different.
The novel was written for a mature audience. Here's an excerpt:
The suit looked limp, almost empty...fresh blood spewed from a huge hole in the side....what appeared to be a long cloth belt streaming out of the suit, apparently dyed red by blood. A piece of the exploding Core Fighter must have hit his friend, Amuro surmised, only to realize a moment later that the "cloth belt" was his friend's intestines, unraveling before him.
- From MS Gundam: Awakening, chapter 1, p. 34
It's not the best novel out there, but it is an informative piece of literature for the gundam universe. Though, it is not considered canon. Technically, this novel puts the numerical value of the different versions/tellings of the original series to at least 5 different versions; The tv show, the manga, the movies, this novel, and the gundam origin manga.
It's still a nice read though. I read it over 7 years ago. If I remember right, Amuro pilots the rx-78-3 gundam g3 later on (tomino's original vision of the gundam), he had already enlisted by the time Zeon attacked Side 7, and Sayla and Amuro sleep together (wasn't sure if that was necessary though).
I'm currently rereading it, because, why not?

My thoughts exactly! one if my favorite parts so far is the brief history of the colonies, like what order they were constructed in.

Never actually had the opportunity to read the novel. Bigger fan of the shows and movies, particularly the U.C timeline. Just loved the clunky mobile suit designs. I can't wait for Origins.
From what I understand, the original show wasn't popular till later, and was cut to 42 episodes than the planned 50.

I'm not a reader, but it is fun reading this. I love the U.C. History, the progress of everything. the suits were design to be more military like, except some of them; he rx-78-2 [original] gundam, has bright colors to make it more popular with the kids.
and you're absolutely right, the original series wasn't that popular until after the movies came out, and reruns were to be had. And it was cut short, :(.
I remember having an issue of NewType magazine, which from japan (translated to English). The had a listing of animes currently of different channels. I got it just after Seed came out in Japan, and of curious interest, MS gundam was still being played on tv! I thought that was crazy!
Despite the bad animation, it's still a great series.
Origin should be awesome, I read some of the manga, and it's really good.

There is so much side stuff out there that I'd love to get my hands on. Gundam Wing Frozen Teardrop is the big one I want to read.

Haven't read that one yet, but it's now on my list. For a good g-wing manga, Battlefield of the Pacifists (I thought) was good. There was also the manga based off of g-wing, where Zechs turns out to be a good guy (if i remember right). For a good U.C. manga, Blue Destiny is a must read, its just unfortunate the Blue Destiny manga was the 1st half, and the second was made for a video game, :/.
