Kinja'd!!!

This lady was the most inconsiderate person I have ever seen on the road in my two years of driving. Just, fuck you. Story below. ( The story was revised as apparently it made me come off as an angry bloke, it should now make more sense of what happened.)

Kinja'd!!!

So I have my 944 on campus for the week before I have to store it, so I'm naturally driving it as much as I can, for as long as I can; even if that means being lazy and driving across the street to class. Unlike new cars, it takes a hell of a while to warm up and get to a temperature where I'm not putting any extra stress on the engine because It's a high revving engine(compared to my ST at least).

So I get in the car, start her up, and sit there for 5 minutes( which I get is not smart now, that was how I was taught to warm up a car.) before I realize I don't have the time to warm her up and have to get to the workshop before class. So I head out keeping the rpms below 2000. The stupidity starts now.

This time, I will explain it better so that it makes more sense:

I'm the red line, and speeding lady(not yet at least) is the blue line. She's all the way down the road, maybe a little further than when the blue line starts, so I had the time to pull out of the lot and drive up carefully without revving the engine to high into the turn lane.

Now, the speed limit on this road is 40mph, and I'm doing 30mph by the time I get to the yellow arrow, ready to turn into my turn lane, blinker is on way beforehand. I notice that the she's getting closer really quickly, she's doing at least 60mph. As I get ready to turn into the lane, she's still picking up speed; at this point, I'm turning into the middle lane to turn into the school, with no idea that she's gonna do exactly what I'm doing and where her light blue line turns a dark purple(still her) she goes into the lane right then and there and speeds up, it almost looked like she floored it then.

I'm a bit after the yellow arrow when I was going to get into that lane, she completely ignores the fact of what I'm about to do, and speeds past me into the lane as I'm almost in; I quickly go back into the lane we were both previously in to avoid collision.

And I'm just sitting there thinking: Is she fucking blind?? How does she not see the only bright red sports car, and red car in general right in front of her?!? It honestly looked like she didn't see me at all. I wasn't pissed, or furious, I was just dumbstruck at what just happened.

Coincidentally, we pull into the same lot, and it turns out this bitch is a teacher/professor of some sort who must have been late for something. I park in a spot behind her and see her getting out; putting on heels at the same time. She was driving barefoot(not that it's a big deal). She takes a quick blank look at me as I get my things out of my hatch and walks away.

Kinja'd!!!

But my friend called me as I was getting my things asking where I was, and I replied in a decent volume of voice: "I'm on my way, almost got rear ended by some lady in a Fusion on the way!" I think she heard me.

Kinja'd!!!

(The Fusion in question)

Now I'll admit, that I was going 10 under the limit, and that maybe idling my car to warm it up isn't smart, but again, that's what I was taught growing up; but how am I wrong in what I did? Here she was, clearly going at what was almost highway speed on a 40mph road with traffic ahead, I think I was being relatively safe compared to her. I may have been at fault a bit, but definitely not completely.

Bad judgement call on both parties. You saw a car coming, should have been able to judge speed, and pulled out anyway all while planning to not hit the speed limit before turning off. She saw you waiting, saw you pull out and could judge your speed as well. I think this could have been avoided if you 1) would have waited the 10 seconds for her to pass or 2) just drove your car after starting it. The fastest way to warm up your car is to start driving it . Letting your car sit at idle when it's cold it a terrible idea. The engine isn't doing any work to get up to temperature and it takes forever.

Yup, pretty much. Anytime you do something that forces another driver to respond you risk a bad time...even if everything you do is totally by the book. Smarter to wait it out.

I think people in general need to calm down about road goings-on. Seriously. It'll kill your personality and body even if it doesn't kill you in your car. I get to hear all day about people's road-rage experiences and guess what: they're all, 100% of them, in the right. They've never done anything wrong on the road, and everyone should yield to them of course because: duh.

I'm not saying she didn't do anything wrong. But that's a lot of "bitches" for a 10-second encounter. Just remember, you did the right thing by being aware and driving defensively . The problem with getting bent out of shape is you meet questionable behavior with... uncivilized behavior. You'd be shocked how in-tune people actually are to their own missteps and other people's reactions. A quick smirk and glare and maybe an audible "really?" as she passed by in the parking lot would probably help her remember next time that she's not the only racer on the track.

I know I should just be thankful I avoided an accident and let it go, but I'm not there yet. It's not a good sign that my commute stresses me out twice as much as my actual job.

I dunno, man. I see drivers all the time who are doing 10+ mph below the speed limit, and the LAST thing I want is to end up behind them. It is awful. I'm guessing she thought you were an older driver who might get intimidated making a left at that intersection, and she decided it was better to risk death than to get stuck behind that action. Which, you know, is just rock-solid reasoning.

But from your point of view, was it obvious the Fusion was gunning for the left turn lane when you were getting ready to move over? I ask because if I'm speed limited, I'm not anxious to get in front of an aggressive, fast-moving car. Too much drama.

I really don't think she saw me, because she would have either:

1. Slowed down, she kept on going like I wasn't there.

2. How would I let her pass? I was already halfway into the lane! She merges into the middle lane way before she should have and just sped up as I was merging. I honestly thought she would at least notice me and slow down in that lane.

Oh she seen't you all right - she just wanted to ride up your ass because she's a professor and you're a student.

Also, I meant if you had waited to pull out onto the road. Did you see her before pulling out of the parking area? It may seem like all the time in the world, but 10 or 20 seconds really isn't that long to wait for peace of mind. If she actually had her head up her ass then you'd still be filling out insurance paperwork for your now-wrecked Porsche :(

It honestly didn't look like it. I had all the time to move up to the point to properly go into the middle lane, but I didn't know she was going to until the last minute, when cuts over to the left into the middle lane way behind me and guns it as I'm halfway into the middle lane.

Wrong? It's Oppo, do whatever you like. Calling a woman you don't know a bitch that many times when she hasn't even really done anything to you is a little weird, though. Going on about a situation when you weren't even really in the right or she in the wrong, also weird. Idling your car for 5 minutes, and wanting to do so even longer before being interrupted, very strange.

You just sound like a really angry person in this post. It wasn't entertaining to read about and didn't educate or inform me in anyway. I just don't see the point in sharing this, that's all.

Kinja'd!!! K-Roll-PorscheTamer > Party-vi
11/04/2014 at 16:09

Kinja'd!!!0

She was very far away, it looked like she was doing the speed limit and I had the time to pull onto the road. Until I got in the far left lane next to the middle lane, it was when I flipped my signal to turn into the middle lane ahead of her that I saw her speed up aggressively. If I hadn't quickly moved back into the left lane, she would've rear-ended me no doubt because she never slowed down until right before the light.

So explain to me how I'm still the fool in this event please, like everyone else has said.

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
11/04/2014 at 16:29

Kinja'd!!!1

From your post, it seemed as if you saw her, thought you had enough time to merge-and-turn, and then didn't. If she sped up after you flicked on your turn signal then yeah, it was her fault obviously, but was she still gaining on you before you went to shift lanes?

I didn't mean to call you a fool or belittle you with my initial post, I just wanted to explain that the whole situation could have been avoided if a few things were done differently. Imagine if you both did collide. Regardless of what speed she was going, if the accident occurs and you aren't fully in the lane you were merging to, you could be found at fault (happened to me). In the same instance, a cop shows up on seen and sees a professor in a family sedan and a red Porsche driven by a young man crashed, he may start to draw some incorrect conclusions about what happened.

Regardless, I still think you should drive your car after starting it (albeit not hard) to warm it up faster. Keep revs below 3k and don't do any hard driving and it should warm up nicely, as opposed to letting the cold oil just sit there at idle-oil-pressure instead of a higher useful oil pressure you'd get driving down the road. Just a tip.

Kinja'd!!! K-Roll-PorscheTamer > Party-vi

Kinja'd!!!0

She was gaining on me like a failed track day video. Unfortunately, I'm in a no-fault state as well. So that wouldn't have helped either. Damn stereotypes too, but there were students walking outside, so maybe there could be some testimony, I'm very glad nothing happened.

I was keeping the revs well below 3k, I thought that high oil pressure when cold was bad?

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > K-Roll-PorscheTamer

The engine needs oil pressure to force it through valleys and to lubricate parts. Your oil needs to get pumped up into the con-rod bearings and valve train among other places. Keeping your engine at idle does noting to pump oil up to the top of your valvetrain and can prematurely wear parts over time. Also, keeping your engine at idle means it's not burning very efficiently (or as efficiently as it could) so you waste a lot of gas. Best way to warm up your car is start it and drive off like a normal person. If you're waiting to just warm up the inside with heat then the same applies - getting the car moving will heat it up faster.

Her side: I was traveling down the road to work. Now this road is a 4 lane road with sparse traffic with a speed limit of forty, but traffic usually goes 50 which is what I was doing. As I'm approaching by turn a kid in an old red coupe merges out going like 20 miles an hour. He's had his blinker on forever so I figure he's not going to get into the turn lane. As soon as I get over he tries to merge right into me! Then we end up in the same parking lot and I hear him bitching to someone on the phone that I did something wrong...WTF?!

What everyone hears from both versions: Driving happened, people are angry

Otherwise, bitches and hoes man. It happens.

A couple years ago I was out driving the SL600 just for kicks, and this bitch comes flying up my ass at a stop sign, slams on her brakes, and once she's stopped, I see she's nose deep in her phone.

So I sat there. For a couple minutes. Then she put her phone down, and realized I was waiting for her to put her phone down. Funny how time flies when you're having fun, right?

I judged quite well I should think. I had plenty of time to take my time and pull out into the road, it was only when I was changing lanes did she seem to all of a sudden speed up.

But I still don't see how I was in the wrong, I'll admit that I must have done something partly wrong, but I don't know or see it. :(

Was it my going too slow?

Kinja'd!!! JGrabowMSt > K-Roll-PorscheTamer
11/04/2014 at 17:48

Kinja'd!!!1

I didn't mean that you were in the wrong, the lady should have slowed down far earlier, if for nothing other than being in a school zone.

Now, if your signal was on and you were merging into a lane, well, she'd have to be pretty damn blind to miss that. If your whole trip was literally the path of the red line, I see no fault on your behalf. Why? Should you really have had to bang up to 40mph in that short a distance? I don't think so.

Other person was driving recklessly. My actions would have been a lot more stern in that situation. My dad's best friend was killed by a reckless driver.

Since the first time I got behind the wheel, driving has been both enjoyable to me, but also a matter of my own life. When someone else thinks they have the liberty to endanger that, there's a very serious problem.
