Any mobile phone futurists out there could surmise if the S4 is going to still be an adequate phone in two more years?
I've been on my current Google Nexus S for almost four years now, still on Android 4.1.2 and it's just way too slow even for my frugality. The single-core beast just can't hang anymore.

My S3 could probably last me the next 2 years, so I'd say go for it.

Yes, especially if you move to a custom/third-party ROM.
Cyanogenmod is not perfect (nightlies can be...temperamental), but goddamn does it wake up that phone. It's like a tune for your car.

I recommend using a different launcher as opposed to the Samsung built in android 4.4.2, Samsung had many nice features and usually good hardware their launchers typically have a lot of bloatware that bogs down the phone.

I still have an S3 as well. No problems with it. Granted, the most I do with it on the internet is look at wikipedia.

As a S5 owner, I'd say the "jump" in features/performance was minimal, and not worth the price. So S4 for free is good.
That is unless you can get a Note 3 for around the same price. I'd say that would be the superior offer, especially if you like bigger phones. This is the only disadvantage of the S4. It's the older, smaller generation of phones, so in 2 years it will be among some of the smaller formats in use.

Addendum: Much of the lockscreen widgets etc. that made the S4 so cool were lost in the translation to S5, so in some ways it's a better unit.

If you can make a Nexus S last 4 years, your S4 will probably last a decade.

Man I love Cyanogenmod. It says a lot that almost all the new features of Lollipop are already on my OnePlus One.

I just did the same thing. I saw no reason to spend money on a new phone and the S4 seemed like a good deal for free.
