I love how good my M5 sounds is with a cat-back, no resonator, Magnaflow exhaust...I HATE how droney it is. The previous owner had it installed and I had hoped to be able to just reinsert the resonator...no such luck. Got it on the lift and found it was cut before the cats, a straight pipe welded in and the mufflers welded on, basically cut and welded from headers back, meaning I'll have to replace everything (including the cats) if I want a slightly quieter M5, ugh.
Anyone with a E39 M5 want to trade a header-back magnaflow system for a stock? :O

Why not find a good exhaust shop willing to cut and modify the system as you want? The shop that's doing work on my Magnum will make any exhaust you want them to, and that includes any welding that may need to be done. Dropping your exhaust and attacking it with a Sawzall can certainly remedy your problems, and if the shop is actually good at what they do, they'll make sure it can be modified again in the future with far less trouble.

Easy solution, go online, buy correct sized high flow resonators, take to reputable muffler shop, point under car and say "weld in here", hand them car keys, come back later and hand them money, drive off in quieter M5.

I'm guessing you live in a state that doesn't have emissions testing, right?

Possible solution: give me the E39 and I'll give you my E46 :3

On other note, should you ever decide to sell this, supposing that at that moment it is not totalled by some 19/yo on her iPhone taking selfies and sexting on snapchat, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Can you fit bullet mufflers where the straight pipes are? That can take some of the drone out.

Oh yeah, well I'll give him two Beetles, a Fastback and a Ranger. Suck it.
