It's been awhile since I've worked on these but the only major issue I've seen them have is needing a timing chain replacement fairly early. Also, I feel like around 30% of them develop water leaks from sunroof drains clogging.

Other than that, the 2nd gen CTS has more or less been my family's car of choice since they came out in 2008, and I swear by them. I prefer the RWD, if only for the "Stabilitrak Competition mode" + brakes + accelerator = easy ass burnout machine factor.

Look out for tasteless wheels that hinder ride quality

awesome. So T chain failures on the v6 versions? and check the sunroof drains. Got it. This friend is not very car savvy so I dont want to have to fix it for him

t-chain if say happens on about 40% of the Hi-Feature V6s. I wouldn't let that scare them though, seriously is a fantastic car, and after 90% of my experience with them is fixing broken ones, I'd pick it over competitors. And this is coming from a completely removed and unbiased stance. They're the car that got me into Cadillac in the first place.
