Subaru Windshield Warranty Query

So, today we got snow in Atlantic Canada. At least it started. So I get out for a drive to run and errand before it gets too bad. My 2013 Forester is still under warranty which is good because when I got off the gas and let the engine slow the car down I noticed an ugly exhaust noise. That I'm not worried about - it'll be covered under warranty whatever it is. Happens in neutral revving a little bit or if I'm driving along and get off the gas or downshift (handy in icy conditions). Anyway, that's not why I'm posting.

The worrying part though, is the windshield. As any lucky Subaru owner here may know, the wiper area of the windshield has a defroster on it - like the full back one but it's just for the wipers. I ran it to keep the freezing rain from getting my screen messy. As I was approaching my house on the way back I heard an ugly pop that sounded like it was the windshield. After backing in I left the car running (was wanting to checked for the exhaust noise) and I thought I'd survey my windshield at the same time. Sure enough there is a crack that runs along the passenger side wiper defroster. Of course this would happen on Sunday and I won't be able to check in with Subaru until tomorrow but I wanted to check and see if anyone here had any ideas about this. I'm worried it won't be and then what it would cost to get it done.

That sux. I wonder if the temperature difference could have caused that. Check the user manual to make sure there isn't a limit you missed. maybe it was caused by the heaters. I have those too I think.

Take a ball point pen and rub it back and forth perpendicular to the crack over the entire length. If it catches anywhere, it's impact damage and you'll be on the hook. If it does not, it it most likely a defect and Subaru *should* cover it.

I'll have to see if I have a pen... lol. Thanks for the tip - I'll give it a whirl.

I can't imagine there being temperature regulations on it, but I'll check. I know the old 01 Outback I had til this summer was fine on the original windscreen and temperatures never matter. That, and, you would only need to run it when it's cold out. Today was hovering around 0 deg C so I mainly wanted to keep the freezing rain from building up. I've run it on the Outback as chilly as -35C and worse.

That does suck, but it's just one of the costs of ownership (where I live is particularly rocky, I budget one windshield a year). Cost to replace my non-heated 2010 Foz windshield was $250USD, but that was a rush job. I'd probably expect the heated ones to be about $350USD installed.

Impact damage is not warrantable, otherwise you should be fine.

Yeah, I do see it as a cost of ownership thing since these things happen, but not if the heater element caused it. The heater shouldn't cause a crack wen it's cold out because you'd only use it when it's cold out of course. I'm going to take a better look once the snow stops.
