I really am starting to like Mk5 and up models, but the 500 abarth depreciates in value. Which means cheaper to get used in the future. Also the exhaust system on the Abarth is an addicting note. What does Oppo think?

Kinja'd!!!

Plaid seat car with spartan interior and FSI.

or

Kinja'd!!!

The angriest little Italian car with a great exhaust note.

No you got it all wrong its an audi r8. Couldn't find a high res Mk5 pic. Most are cambered out to hell or sticker bombed.

This is true about the stance/sticker issue...I say if you don't care about practicality go with the Fiat, if you actually need to transport people on a regular basis get the GTI.

Of course the VW will be the logical choice....but then again the Abarth isn't about logic is it? Get the Abarth.

The odd part is the 500 has a wee bit more space than the r53 cooper(competes on the gti's level). As the owner of a 4 door car, I usually haul a lot of groceries and musical instruments, and car parts. I don't carry a lot people but the reliability is what matters to me in the long run. I do all of my maintenance, and serviceability is what matters to me.

I want to like the Fiat, but the size of it AND the fact that people will call it "Cute."

Well reliability is a crap shoot on either one...have a look at TrueDelta.com to see what owners are saying. Also just to add another option a lightly used Veloster Turbo maybe within the same budget, and they have been pretty reliable. Of course they aren't nearly as fun as the Abarth or GTI

GTI, for build quality, a great chassis, and practicality. They've proven to be pretty damn reliable thus far, too. If I could justify a car payment I'd be looking seriously at 5 door GTIs. Personally I can't stand the way the 500 looks, but that's a matter of oppopinion.

I've been lusting after the Abarth for awhile. I also don't really carry people, but still on occasion, I need haul a little larger load.

This is my plan if I were to get the Abarth:

I own the Abarth and was also keen on the Mk6 GTI. In the end, I found a loaded '13 Abarth (leather seats, premium tiers, etc. but no sunroof) for $19K. Could not walk away from that deal. A similarly equipped GTI was going to cost $26K+.

If the cost difference doesn't matter, you need to ask yourself one simple question. Do you want to drive a refined and athletic, buttoned-down hot hatch? Or do you want a raw and boisterous micro-hatch that spits, snarls and barks?

I know I made the right decision.

This is one of the reasons that I love the 500 / Abarth and the Mini and 911; it doesn't try to look lik it's tough, mean and trying to kill you like seemingly everything else on the market. There's already waaay too much juvenile misplaced aggression in the world, more so in the US which loves violence wherever it can get it. The world could use a little lightening up.

What's wrong with that? Not secure enough to driving a cute car? You have to hide behind a mean car?

Love them both, but kinda comparing oranges with tangerines. Firstly, they're from different segments with the VW being much larger. The Fiat started as a city car so it embodies a different set design parameters. Having driven them both, I think the Abarth is more fun and characterful, embodies a much richer racing heritage and makes everyday driving more of an event, whereas the GTi is, in a typical German manner, a more serious car but better if you do a lot of driving and have to carry people or lots of stuff often. Having said that, I've ridden in the back of a 500 for an hour long trip and it was surprisingly acceptable. The Germans are incapable of making an Abarth 500 and the Italians wouldn't know how to do a Golf. That's the great thing about both of them.
