And now they think that the lower gas prices is going to hurt the economy. Because logic.

No, but low gas prices is an indicator of an economy in free fall. Look at the gas prices of 2008. I was seriously paying 1.25 at the height of the recession. So.... while we as jalops may enjoy lower gas prices, it is not necessarily a good thing.

So how much is that in real money? You know, American greenbacks. The world's currency. Besides, I've got matches for my cigarettes. I don't need to buy a litre.

112.9 cents per litre. That's cheap here in Canadia.
If my math's correct (likely it isn't), that's $3.835 USD/gal

looool. That's true though. But in north Houston i passed a station selling for $2.35. I was scared cos i thought maybe they've played with the pumps or super diluted the gas but looking at the number of customers they had, i don't think so. Gas is cheaper right now than when i first came into the country five years ago

Lower gas prices mean people have more money to do other things. So it can also help the economy. Keynesian economics in practice.

Yup. Cheaper now than for a very long time. Not sure why. I lived in HOU for four years in the early '90s. I liked it, for the most part. Certainly cheaper rents than most anywhere else.

Probably just another gas by another name.... I just wouldn't trust a WalMart/Costco brand to do the same as a name brand. It's not like we're talking toilet paper here.

Kirkland is a WalMart brand, is all I know. No WalMarts that I know of sell gas.... but my Costco does. I have never filled up there though.

I have to admit I haven't been to the gas station in a few weeks and had no idea what the current price is. Nice to see that it's dropped so much! I'm mostly paying about $1 per "gallon" by plugging in at my house to charge at night. Since the Volt goes 30-40 miles on a charge, or on a gallon of gas, I consider them interchangeable. Since my last gas fillup a few weeks ago, I've used 1 gallon of actual gasoline and travelled 200 miles for "200 MPG". Although I have also paid about $5 in electricity costs. So it's cost me about $8 in various fuels to drive the last 200 miles. You can tell how far I'm driving typically by my average MPG (see picture)
Low points are generally road trips. The lowest point was an intentionally bad tank of gas (I was trying to see how bad I could make the MPG). So what's the gas price again? I haven't been paying much attention.
(sorry for the 'smug' sounding opening, I don't mean it to come across that way. But I pay so little attention to gas prices anymore it's almost silly.)

sorry for the 'smug' sounding opening
Not at all. It's interesting to see the data, and to get some idea about the operating costs. My wife drives 30 miles r/t to work everyday, and something like this could really pay off. In fact, that's probably the perfect use for a hybrid car. However, I drive the car out of town ~500 miles r/t about once a month. So this may not be a viable option. Interesting post, though. Thanks.

How does that convert from Loonies to Dollars?
Diesel
> Sam
10/29/2014 at 13:45 | 0 |
Except that a primary reason gas goes down is less demand. That happens because people can't afford to use their cars outside of necessity. It really is more an indication of the total fuel demand though, not just the USA. Probably is a bigger indicator of a recession in China than anything else.

Walmart and Costco use Murphy Oil Gas. Refined in Chalmette, Louisiana (for the most part). Murphy Oil destroyed several city blocks during Hurricane Katrina because they didn't move all the fuel into one tank, so it floated away and busted apart. Here's a nice refresher .

That's one of the things I love about the Volt - that flexibility to be a full EV or go 500 miles when you need to. To an extreme, this summer I had to get to Florida in a hurry (dad had a stroke) with my brother. We balked at the last-minute airfare (about $800 one way for each of us) so we drove the Volt down and back a week later, totalling about 4,000 miles with little to no place to pllug in. I started that trip from Portland Maine (was on vacation), drove to Boston to sleep, picked up my brother and we drove straight through, arriving in FL 1500 miles later in 24 hours. That's nonstop driving besides gas stations - he slept while I drove and vice-versa. Yet during the week and my typical commute, the engine doesn't come on at all. It's the only EV that can do this. (EREV, okay, but don't call it a Hybrid or GM gets all huffy)
