RPM @ 65 MPH in my 4.6L V8 Panther (in 4th gear): 1600ish

Kinja'd!!!

RPM @ 62 MPH in my 1.6L 5-speed Versa (in top gear): 3000

bearing in mind that the Panther has nearly 2 tons on the Note (4200 lbs vs 2400 lbs) and makes 3x as much torque

Is the Versa a CVT or a manual? Silly question probably but my Cube revs at 3 grand while going 80. 65 MPH is a nice 2-25ooRPM.

It's the 5-speed manual as stated.

Sometimes I wonder why 7th gear in my car doesn't do like 1500 rpm at like 80 mph

Whoops, missed that part. Fuel economy may be the only real advantage of a CVT.

That said, I'm blown away by the 30MPGs you're getting in the panther.

The Versa is rated at 26/35 with the manual, I always get at least 35 around town. The Versa picture is from today and I got 42 MPG for this trip.

In the Panther, I usually get 28 on long stints like that, mostly doing 70 MPH. I wouldn't say I'm a hypermiler, but I always get above estimates.

The CV I used to drive got excellent(for a huge car) gas mileage on the highway.

MUH MERIKAN V8 also cruises at 60 like at 1,300 rpm.

I drive too aggressively to get better than the estimates. My Cube still manages a nice 30mpg average, 28 city/31 highway despite my leadfoot. Is your Versa a Note btw?

Yeah, as long as you don't get a P71 with the more aggressive gearing, Panthers generally get very good fuel economy for being big old heavy boats. I guess that's the tradeoff for them not being particularly quick.

Related question - why did BMW setup the gearing the way they did in my E90 M3?

I have a 7 speed DCT and the gear ratios are SUPER short

I understand why they did it for gears 1-5 as the engine is high-revving and peak torque comes on late. So you want short ratios for optimal performance. But why not make gears 6 and 7 taller for better highway fuel efficiency?

5th gear is good for 150 MPH so it's not like making gears 6 and 7 a bit taller is going to hurt you on the track that much. Especially 7th gear - you're probably never going to have a long enough straight on a road course to get to 7th gear.

When I'm going 75 MPH on the freeway I'm revving over 2500 RPM. Gas mileage would be a lot better if I was cruising at lower RPMs like you do.

How do you like the Note? I always found them to be cool looking and was looking at them before I found this Cube.

Isn't the E90 M3 one of those cars with gas guzzler tax? They probably weren't focusing on fuel economy. They probably homologated the gearing from some sort of racing series where having all seven gears so short would be advantageous.

It also may have been to capitalize on that V8's peak power range. My Versa is geared really short because it only makes a smidge over 100 HP so you really have to ring it out to get moving.

The Town Cars get the best mileage because of their air suspension and slightly better aerodynamics

I quite like the Note. I went to the dealer intending to buy a 2014 or 2015 sedan, base model, manual, but they didn't have any. I asked if I could order one, and they said Nissan wouldn't even allow the dealer to order the stick shift ones because they just wouldn't sell.

Knowing this is partially BS because I owned a 2012 Versa 1.6 S manual sedan a while ago, I let the salesman steer me into the Note I ended up buying and took it for a test drive. It feels better put together, more sound insulation, and nicer quality carpet to the sedan.

Anyway, it does the job, its ridiculously roomy for a subcompact, gets exceptional fuel economy and is comfortable for me (people over 180 lbs tend to find the front seats too small).

Don't all Town Cars have dual exhaust as well? I'm not sure if that hurts or helps fuel economy.

Kinja'd!!! Arch Duke Maxyenko, Shit Talk Extraordinaire > Vimto
10/28/2014 at 22:58

Kinja'd!!!0

It helps. The easier for the exhaust to exit, the easier it is on the motor. There are a lot of ways to increase power that also increase fuel economy. Because the goal is the same either way, make the motor use the gas more efficiently.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Vimto
10/28/2014 at 22:59

Kinja'd!!!0

It did have the guzzler tax.

I didn't think about that - if they tweaked the ratios for the road then it could hurt them in racing when the car needs to be setup the same.

My best in the marauder was 26mpg highway, that was with an intake and tune which didn't lock the converter until 59mph.

But yes 2.73 and single exhaust can put a newer car right at 30mpg highway with careful driving, but I'd rather not have to deal with the lackluster acceleration of 2.73s.

Not all of them, I don't know exactly how you have to option out a town car for it to have duals, I'd imagine it gets paired up with the RAS or something.

Tire width is also a factor...what does the Marauder run from the factory? 245s?

What's the final drive? I'd imagine it's quite high. Haven't messed around with gear ratios for awhile but I'd most likely bump 2nd and 3rd down by .5 . Honestly I guess ///M set it up to make it more tolerable around town.

Most of the 2003+ Town Cars I've seen have dual exhaust I believe. I'm happy with my single and 2.73 gears because I drive like the old man who owned the car before me... I would love to hear the engine every now and then though

235/50/18 front and 245/55/18 rear. The LX Sport had 235's all around IIRC, most panthers have 225's.

The Town Car trims always confuse me. Signature, Limited, Executive...there's no real hierarchy there. At least with the Mercs, GS -> LS -> LSE (not all years) is easy to remember.

I don't know the town car trims so well in order form but signature is the base model. All the town car taxi's you see running around NYC are Signature L's. I THINK executive is the top trim for most years. Cartier hasn't been around in ages.

I've got a 2.88 for the Ranchero. Then again, first gear for the trans I've got is a stupidly low 3.42, and I'm going to have somewhere north of 250lb-ft in a ~2500lb car with moderate size 15" wheels. A Town Car it is not.

I've got a 4.2 Rover going into a project with a 2.88 rear. Should be nice and rumbley on the highway.

I have 2.93's in the BMW and the only reason I'll put up with the shit low end is because it cruises great on the highway. I don't need two cars that go down the highway at 3000rpm @ 80mph like the marauder already does with its 4.10 gears. The BMW will never be that much of a monster so I'm going to keep the rear end numerically low.

The Ranchero is enough of a P/W abomination that with the super-low first and not so much weight in the back anything lower would just be dumb and incitement to DORIFTOOOOO. With the locker making sure that *both* rear wheels would break loose, that would be an even more solidly SMRT thing to do.

I didn't see the final drive on the site. I think it's pretty aggressive

What's crazy is that gearing is so short that the car is constantly upshifting even when going slow (if you leave it in auto mode). It will hit 7th gear at like 40 MPH when cruising around!
