The most annoying part of being an aviation nerd is when people only know two or three planes.

Here is the list of said planes.

However, the best part of the day is meeting a fellow aviation nerd and discussing the reason why nobody knows what the hell a C-141 Starlifter is, let alone the difference between the A and B models.*

*side note: the C-141 is one of the only planes where you can really tell the A and B models apart, so it's pretty infuriating. Above are A and B examples, the B model being longer.

I stopped reading FP aviation articles. What annoys me more is how people only go straight to military answers. Don't get me wrong, I love military aviation. But there are other answers.

If I was checking C-141s, I'd be more keen to look for the refueling hump. Of the top of my head I can name two other aircraft with simple differences people won't notice; 747 and UH-60.

I had the privilege of walking through the Hanoi Taxi some years ago at Oshkosh.

The Starlifter was such a beautiful bird.

I consider myself a semi-nerd... But I honestly know a handful of planes. I can remember a ton more though and with my pilot friend I spend a lot of time going:

Of course I know the important ones, F-22, F17, MiGs, X-Planes, P-51, Mitsubishi Zero, Comet, P-38...

so, lets put in there things to email about. I get crap from my father in law all the time about airplane stuff. Jokes, etc that made thw rounds with pilots first and then he finally gets it a few years later and forwards to me.....

last thing I want to do after flying all day is talk flying with him. And he wants to ask about crashes. His favorite Chan is fox news. And he likes planes. Therefore he has to talk planes and fox new on planes with me.

Theres aviation nerds and theres aviation nerds. Aparently all sorts of subclasses of Netcom.

My Guard unit flew in a C141B when we deployed to Panama in '91. Loud as hell, cold, and uncomfortable web lawn chair seats. Still managed to sack out for most of the flight.

I'm familiar with a lot of newer planes, but hearing about and the Starlifter, I guess I'm less of a nerd than I thought haha. I've sat on the Oshkosh flightline at Airventure so hopefully that counts for something!

I've seen a fair number of C-141s barely hanging in the air on final for the old Wright-Patterson AFB...

Honestly never compared an A or a B though...I feel ashamed.
