Dear BMW M3,

I knew from the moment we met that you were different than the rest. Your SMG transmission was red hair in this world of blondes and brunettes. "Don't do it, don't take that one home", they said. But I didn't listen. Never once did I regret that decision.

Kinja'd!!!

Day after day, your can-do attitude and playful demeanor brought a joy to driving that I hadn't experienced before. There wasn't anything or anywhere you wouldn't go (when properly equipped, of course). Mile after mile. To the beach, to the mountains, through inches of snow, and 8,200 RPM you went. Smile after smile.

Those fun drives through the hills seem a distant memory now. Three years. Wow. These days your sticky tires roll on nothing but highway, rarely getting up to temperature. Commuter duty may not be what we had in mind, but you look great doing it, and do it so well.

You may have noticed there is something different about this week. Maybe the giveaway is the pile of your own parts in the trunk. I know you sense that something is wrong. This week will not be easy for either of us. Come Friday, you will travel south to a new home. With a new owner. And in this place your legs will once again be stretched like you deserve.

Letting you go isn't easy. Though I never gave you a name, you are my pet tiger. A handful at times and way more than I needed but everything I ever wanted. I'll miss your growl and that menacing stare out from your cage…. err parking spot. Of all the BMWs I've owned, you, M3, were hands down my fave.

Our time together may come to an end but your time on the road has just begun. Farewell, M3. Goodbye.

But if you do, make sure you end up with a picture as cool as this one.

You could have at least scaled and color corrected the train!

hey, I thought it was damned impressive I was able to find a source image that fit the curve. scale was selected based on the curve, colour correction isn't a feature of MS-Paint really :P

I applaud this ode to the M3. Very classy, I'm positive if I were to part with mine I would place an extra vial of blood (along with the amount it has already taken) somewhere amongst it.

For real tho, great send off for IMO one of the best all-rounders. P-car next?

I don't have a twitter account, but i want to know what replaces it!

PS: If it's not a Cayman or 911 you've probably made a huge mistake.

I have mine up for sale now; so many cars to own, only one life to live...

I've got it priced at $14k, will likely settle for $12k. The trouble is, as I'm thinking about what its replacement will be, I can't think of anything that will give me the same satisfaction or induce as many positive hormonal reactions as this e46 M3 has for a comparable amount of money. What car available in the American marketplace will cause me to fall in love as hard as this one? If you have an answer, tell me.

At least tell us if it has horizontally opposed pistons.

The answer to this question balances on your need for useable back seat.

That's a tough one, I sold my E46 M3 for an E90. I LOVE the E90, but I don't love it like I did the E46, and I certainly didn't fall as hard. The E90 is faster, better, and much more livable than the E46. However the "car and driver relationship" with the E46 is unmatched IMO. E46 personified "Sweet, here comes my driver! I don't even care if he put's his seat belt on, lets do this!" E90 personified "Good morning sir, I'd like to let you know that you are not supposed to look at the screen when you are driving. I must also keep reminding you in 4 places that you will need fuel sometime in the next few days. I'm ready for a splendid drive as long as you don't mind if I do most of the work".

That's exactly why I bought the e46 m3 instead of the e90 335i. Sure that n54 turbo 6 will give me 400+ hp and a near-as-makes-no-difference amount of torques, but I didn't see having a relationship with it. And the s52 is just glorious in every way.

Yep, and full disclosure, When I told my father (also a car nut) that I was going to look at the E90 M3, he asked if he could buy the E46 before I had the chance to consider trading it in, and obviously I sold it to him. He had previously had one but it was an SMG and he loved the car but couldn't live with the gearbox. Hopefully I will be able to buy it back from him some day, but until then I do love the E90 and my fiance can't make me get rid of it when we have kids because it's safe and has four doors!

I can only hope to be as cool as him at 66. I actually like the E46 so much that I would live with an SMG if was the only way I could have one, but yes MT>SMG all day.
