When I heard some guitar riffs in a song on the store's radio that sounded strangely familiar–the ones from the Top Gear theme song. It turns out the melody we're all familiar with is actually from a song called "Jessica" from a 1970's rock band called the Allman Brothers. It never really occurred to me to look that up until now.

One day my father walked into my room, guitar in his hand, and started playing "Jessica". He then asked me if I knew the song title and couldn't understand why I instantly yelled "TOP GEAR!".

I'll leave this here: James May making the Top Gear theme with exhaust notes

I'm currently in the process of watching all of Top Gear episodes in order on Netflix. this one was on a few weeks back. A very well done segment in my opinion.

I kinda figured that the tune likely wasn't exclusive to Top Gear when I heard it in a commercial for an oil/tire change chain a while back. I don't remember which it was... Jiffy Lube? Midas?

I find it really odd how many people don't know this. Jessica is a national treasure. It's a really amazing instrumental song

Also a "WAT" moment: discovering that the BBC F1 theme has...words.

(It's the guitar solo from Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain." I didn't realize that one had words to it for the longest time.)

Really? You don't listen to classic rock? Guess you never played Guitar Hero II either then.

I thought this was common knowledge, like gravity and 2+2.

Sometimes I forget that not everybody is mostly into music that was made before we were born.

I love the Allman Brothers, and Jessica is one of their best songs.

Here we go again. It's not a fair assumption to say that one's ignorance of a single song out of the thousands, millions that were produced in an era before I was born does not make me a glazed-eyed, Top 40 fan who thinks any music before "19XX" is oblivious.

I sincerely didn't mean any disrespect. I apoligize if I came off that way. I myself am oblivious to most music made in the last 25 years. You recognized it, took the initiative to look it up, and posted about it, so clearly you're not a glazed-eyed Top 40 only fan. I'm glad to see another person discover some music that I love.

Jessica is great, but "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" takes it to the next level.

Yes, as you can see, "Jessica" isn't all too unusual to those of us of a certain age (range). I don't doubt for a minute that the Allman Brothers aren't TG fans either. Hearing that "ka-ching" every time the show is aired probably helps somewhat.

On a tangentially related note, the soundtrack to "Guardians of the Galaxy" is the first soundtrack to hit #1 without a single song that hadn't been released previously (in this case, 20+ years ago). It's an outstanding soundtrack from a nearby era.

Yeah, I've listened to to the GoG track several times, it's probably one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. And as you say, having not been raised as far back as Jessica's prominence, it's more difficult for me to have as vast of a mental music library of songs from that era than some other people on oppo.

Yeah. I was briefly astounded when I read this article.

And then I realized I’m a 30 something who grew up in Georgia, so of course the Almann Brothers is something that’s going to be part of my culture by osmosis.
