you're in the NY area right? I saw a techno violet '98 Manual coupe for $4k obo a few weeks ago.. It needed a radiator and it had over 175k on it, but it looked really clean. Owner swapped in seats from an E46, so the interior looked great.

Brian Silvestro
> CAcoalminer
10/27/2014 at 22:43 | 0 |
I think it's a REALLY good looking car. It's been on sale for a really long time though. Many many months. If it was $10k less, it would've sold a very long time ago. It is in Canada, so I guess that affects the pricing.
CAcoalminer
> Brian Silvestro
10/27/2014 at 22:47 | 0 |
Interesting. When I initially looked at it, I thought it looked amazing but felt that it was a bit overpriced as well.
Maybe someone will be able to negotiate them down and get a terrific vehicle.
Brian Silvestro
> CAcoalminer
10/27/2014 at 22:49 | 0 |
I'd go to Canada and pay $30k for it. It is a US vehicle according to the ad, so I guess that's less hoops to jump through.
CAcoalminer

What's even crazier are the Ferrari prices. For instance, I bought my 275 GTB/C in '71 for $5,000 (probably around $30,000 in today's money) and they're now worth a fair bit more:

An all around great car.
Well, the unfortunate thing is that your generation just doesn't ever get to see and hear cars like this so it's difficult to gain true appreciation for them. While I love that people collect these cars and take exquisite car of them, it frustrates me that they hid them in their garages and only allow certain people to see them.
Look what someone shared with me last night:

Indeed. I've always had a soft spot for the A110 but they're so small that my 6'5'' frame could never fit comfortably in one.
Brian Silvestro

10/28/2014 at 11:52 | 0 |
I found it on the internet, but it looks real sadly. What's even more depressing is the FF behind it is just as low to the ground.
I'd love to see one in real life, just to get a sense of how small they really are.
CAcoalminer
> Brian Silvestro
10/28/2014 at 12:05 | 0 |
True. While I love that people are creative and try to make their cars unique, I really can't understand how individuals could think this is nice looking.
This is about the only photo I could find that shows a size comparison and even this isn't very good. Essentially, it's a low, wide car that has very little space inside the cabin.
Brian Silvestro
> CAcoalminer
10/28/2014 at 12:08 | 0 |

CAcoalminer

10/28/2014 at 12:35 | 0 |
I doubt it and you're right. I think everyone sets out with goals to make great cars and has high hopes for them, but I doubt the Alpine employees could have predicted the success the A110 would enjoy. It must have been so gratifying to see the cars that you yourself put together, designed, engineered, etc. taking on the best and prevailing.
On another point, I'm sure many of the workers from back then would be surprised by how much classic cars are worth these days. I mean personally, I can barely believe that a 250 GTO is worth ~$40 million when you could get them for around $4,000 (around $20,000 in today's money) back in the late '60s and early '70s.
Brian Silvestro
> CAcoalminer
10/28/2014 at 12:44 | 0 |
Yeah, that's seriously amazing. The most interesting parts about car history is that some cars were considered not that successful when they first came out, now are highly sought after. Your two GTs are a good example. I remember hearing about them not selling too well when they first came out.
CAcoalminer
> Brian Silvestro
10/28/2014 at 12:56 | 0 |
Very true. For instance, I picked up my black GT in 2008 for $125,000 and the car had less than 200 miles on it. In addition, I remember dealers were selling them for $10,000 under MSRP around '06 or '07 just to get them off their lots. It's odd how perceptions change so quickly.
What I think happened is that people held a brand bias and never tried them initially. However, once they realized how good of a car it is, the prices soared (a bit too much in my opinion).
Brian Silvestro
> CAcoalminer
10/28/2014 at 13:07 | 1 |
That makes sense. Once Jeremy Clarkson actually bought one, people started to realize what a gem it was.
I think the same thing is happening with the Fiesta ST. Ford doesn't make hot hatchbacks!
But it's an amazing car.

I don't have a garage either. At least not until summer when I can move to a house with one. I have tools and access to a shop so I think I'll be okay, considering I'm not gonna do THAT much over the winter with it.

Ah yes, the baby boomer resentment of vintage imports ("rice burners"). Just gotta show him it's really what you want and explain how simple they are. I had to go through exactly this when I bought my first truck (a Toyota pickup).
