In this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that is now first between the popular stories, there is a GIF defacing the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. Why I cannot see in Oppo the same defacement of a Koran or a Torah? Because the people believing in these last two, would get SO VERY angry?

Because gifs about syrup and the Koran Torah are very rare. And everyone who gets angry about religion can be thrown back into the middle ages.

Really? Were you looking specifically to be offended and complain about something? Is religion exclusive of humor now?

I don't get it. What does Syrup and Christian idols have to do with sodomy and traffic cones?

Edit: I haven't seen the Gif play.

Kinja'd!!!

Update: Seen the Gif. It's kind of dumb but not worth getting angry about.

Context. It's a play on the comment 'sweet baby Jesus'.

I'm Catholic, yet I find that hilarious. Maybe I'm just too open minded for my own good.

I don't see how putting syrup on a small ornament is all that offensive.

Sweet baby Jesus... so you see... He poured maple syrup, known for being sweet with sugar and hfcs, on a little figure of Mary holding said baby Jesus. Implying, as it were, that baby Jesus + sweetness = sweet baby Jesus.

[popcorn eating intensifies]

Though really if religion is enough to get you this bent out of shape you need to reevaluate your life pretty hardcore.

It's shit like this that's the reason I'm agnostic-diest.

Ah, the Buddy Jesus!

As long as we are talking about religiously offensive, the whole Dogma / Buddy Jesus was all from a devout Catholic... I think if that proves that you can mock religion (even your own) and not tarnish deeper held beliefs.

Dude, it's a figurine... probably made in China. The Bible (since I assume you are Roman Catholic) has a passage in Exodus about the golden calf. Maybe you should read it ;) There are probably millions out there and quite a few have probably been broken and thrown away... if it were the original Ten Commandments then it would be a different story. As to the Quran and Torah? I just don't even :/

Pass the what? Pass the popcorn.

/What does it mean to be diest? I've never heard that term.
(Not going to start a debate or anything. Just genuinely curious)

I'm not sure if I have the right name, but basically it means I believe there is some sort of higher power, but I don't care other than that, and am going on the assumption that *whatever* higher being is in power, all they'll want is for us to be good people. Nothing more, nothing less. No random dietary restrictions, no "gays r bad" doctrine, just "don't be a cunt" in big curly golden script.

Well, shit. Makes sense to me.

I'm an atheist (not the aggressive, try-to-prove-everyone-wrong kind. The you-do-you kind), but "don't be a cunt" is basically my golden rule.

I find it offensive. I also find it offensive when people crap on "Dubya" in a post reviewing a car. Sadly, shit happens.

Bitchy drama and BS political opinions don't belong on Jalopnik or Oppo.

I didn't get in on all this because Canadia (was traveling). But yeah, I don't know how Kevin Smith (who I admire somewhat) was ever cast as devoutly Catholic (this I don't admire, he's an ultra-liberal BS reformist Catholic, if anything, and the man isn't even churchgoing, so this devout Catholicism thing is almost pre-internet urban myth, or at least completely blown out of proportion). Someone should write a book on it, because he should never in good conscience—which technically he's never in, according to the church—go to mass and receive the eucharist, yet somehow he's a "devout Catholic," years and years after he stopped practicing, if in fact he ever did. Right, a little mockery is OK sure, but outright defaming (and come on, Denver, you need to check yourself if you don't think this is true) is harmful and detestable.

On one hand, I think "ohmygodit'stheinternet, land of neckbeards, and they're ready to mock anything that frowns on their general underachievement, lack of moral objectivity and ignorance or outright rejection of Western tradition, so why be offended? Just avoid those places rife with hatred, right?"

And then on the other hand, I know that this:

Dude, it's a figurine... probably made in China. The Bible (since I assume you are Roman Catholic) has a passage in Exodus about the golden calf. Maybe you should read it ;)

is outright anti-Catholic, and uber-acceptable, even in mainstream American society because we're saturated with anti-Catholic thinking, consciously and unconsciously. But yeah, I'm with Vox because somehow Catholic bashing (and oftentimes Christian bashing as a whole) is the last safe hate speech left in America and the world, because we don't have an active anti-defamation apparatus, nor the aforementioned fatwas to ward off outright threats to our integrity.

And then on my third hand, (and yes, I have three hands, bitches) I say let the fucking Philistines proclaim me ignorant, since the Roman Catholic Church is by far and away the largest single religious group on the earth and always has been. So clearly we wouldn't know what we're talking about, and they as a united front of 4,300 fedora-sporting assholes would.

I wouldn't call it defacing, it's more stupidity if anything.

As a Christian, I've come to terms that not everyone sees eye-to-eye with my beliefs. That's ok, it's a personal relationship and choice that everyone has to make on their own accord (otherwise it wouldn't mean anything). And there are some people who just like to poke fun at anything religious, it's their choice.

Then again, I am a bit envious of the believers of the Koran & Torah, because they get angry. They hold the books so high and very sacred, they don't want them to be damaged in any way. Makes me feel like Christians (and myself) are a bit passively, lukewarm about their faith. But it could also be that I know that the bible, or a figurine of Jesus, gets damaged, they can always be replaced. God isn't limited to those things, at least for me.

Well, that's my 3 cents.
