!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Made it back to St. Louis. Fifth gear worked fine the whole way back. Stopped to drop my buddy off at his place and this is the current situation. The transmission sounds like shit and the car won't even move. I am absolutely fucked.

That's a bad syncro. Puked a bearing. Exactly what happened to me. My car moved though, unfortunately, where it stopped moving was a bigger problem. It got one of the ball bearings in between some gears, and shot it out in the form of 3 pieces through the transmission casing, along with every single ounce of fluid.

Talk to the trans shop about rebuilding it, unless it cannot be salvaged. It will be significantly less than a new one. I don't know if Jasper transmissions are available by you, but if you can get a rebuilt Jasper trans, they have a great warranty, and I've never seen issues with them.

Did you buy your car used? Issues like this are typically a sign of the car being shifted too early, or being subject to hard acceleration too low in the rev range, so it puts stress on syncros.

We shall see. Hopefully getting it worked on this week. Would you recommend bringing it to the Subie dealer or a transmission shop? I know it's going to be pricey either way.

I did buy it used in December of 2012. Got it with 115,000 miles on it and it just rolled over to 140,000.

Trans shop all the way. The dealer may have a trans specialist to look at it, but a trans shop will be more knowledgable, and likely be able to get you back on the road faster.
