Transmission is out,

Pants covered in poo.

This was seriously a pretty intimidating experience, and a PITA throughout. For some back-story, the E30 had a noisy 5th that got worse over the course of a year. Before the weather got too cold we decided to pull it and see what's wrong.

The culprit was the output shaft bearing, which was very pitted, on the balls and inside the channels. New input/output bearings/seals are on order, so the trans should be funky fresh in the next couple weekends!

As a mechanical object though, it's a thing of beauty. All these nesting gears in shades of gunmetal grey, with bronze synchro-accents.
