Kinja'd!!!

Revocation of driving license for life.

The new rules introduce the revocation of the driving license for life, for manslaughter by fault of the driver and in case of presence of at least one dead and one seriously injured, as well as in cases where the driver should have an alcohol rate concentration equal to or greater than 1.5 g/l, or was driving under the influence of drugs.

Crime of road murder.

A new offense of road murder could be introduced for the cases of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , or under the influence of drugs. This would be voluntary and not involuntary manslaughter, as it's considered the knowledge of the possible risks by the killer driver.

Limit of 30 km/h in urban areas.

Under study the possibility of introducing a limit of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (20mph) in the the center of the cities and in the areas close to schools and hospitals, a project that was already experienced for years in several EU countries.

I like all of those new rules. We already have the 20mph limit in heavily pedestrianised areas here in the UK and I feel like it's a good idea. Especially in some school zones here the limit is 20mph when school starts and ends, then 30mph when the school is empty.

I can agree with the 20mph when school is in session, however in my town there is a 20mph section by a school that is 24/7 :(

There are plenty of zones in my town that are permanently 20mph but they all tend to make sense. Streets barely wide enough for one car with parked cars either side for example, since a kid could walk out from between the cars at any time. I've had to stamp on the brakes a few times there and it would be a lot worse at 30.

I'm ok with 20mph in the scenario that you described, just think 24/7 20mph on a normal road, 1 lane in both directions no parked cars is silly

Yeah that is dumb. Most of the school zones around here are pretty narrow roads with parked cars so it wouldn't be that bad, they do tend to use the temporary limits mostly for larger schools on main roads though.

this is my 20mph section, as you can see a fairly normal road yet fixed limit

Probably wanted to avoid the cost of the lights and signs for variable limit or something daft like that.

It'll be interesting to see how it turns out. Hopefully the prosecutors have the courage to apply the laws and make them work. Attaching criminal penalties to certain dangerous acts is a good idea, especially death in the case of drunk/stoned driving - I especially agree that it should be considered a voluntary act.

I get upset when I hear about recidivist drunk drivers killing someone after previously having been stopped or arrested more than 10 times in the past for DUI. Unfortunately, here in Quebec, Canada we have a "no fault" system that is not only separate from criminal law but also removes any civil liability for your actions. You run someone over and they're in assisted living for the rest of their lives? No biggie, the state is responsible for their care and you go on with your life, with nothing but higher insurance premiums as a penalty. You contribute to their care through your taxes, and that's good enough.

Apparently, responsibility is something we don't need here. And it shows in the way people thrash about on the roads with little regard for their fellow citizens.

Where's the speed cameras? Bound to be some there already...or soon.

The 'lifetime ban' is effective only if the person obeys it. Many cases here every year of repeat drunk drivers who have lifetime bans going out, getting drunk again, and causing carnage...then they might get jail time. Maybe.

none there... yet surprising there isn't as I don't think anyone sticks to the 20 limit

The US has the speed restrictions at School zone. Some are 20 and some are 15. I can tell you going from 50 mph to 15 is not fun. Some larger cities have slower limits than 30 but most other cities and towns are 30-35 sometimes 40.
