"Steve in Manhattan" (blogenfreude01)

I still go through this in my mind. Got out of law school in '97, got a decent job. Lived in DC at the time, wanted a car. Had driven a former girlfriend's SVX all over the place, so it was top of the list. I think the car I picked was a '96 (maybe a '97) brand new, 36K sticker, and the car looked like this:
LSi model, same color, every option, including the optional rear spoiler. I went to $27,500, dealer maybe came down to $33K off the 36 grand sticker. I reminded the dealer that the car had been discontinued in the U.S., and the 10 SVXs on their lot would not be flying out of there anytime soon.
Should I have tried harder? Or should I be satisfied that I got a demonstrator '97 SHO for about 25 grand that stickered at $33K (had maybe 1600 miles on it). And cloth interior.

You could always go hunting for another one...

In my opinion, you won and lost. You got one of the best sleepers ever, BUT SVX. I would also take the SHO, but that thought of owning the SVX would forever haunt me. Okay, now I want an SHO and an SVX.

I should add - I could have spent up to 40K, which opened up the wonderful world of a new BMW among other things, and I didn't look at one.

And both cars automatic only. Before I went to law school my car was a Honda CRX Si - five on the floor. Why did I limit myself? Ugh.

I live in Manhattan. To keep that car would cost $450 a month inside, $300+ in an outside lot. And I need a car once a month, if that. And what's left of the car guy in me would insist on restoring it and maintaining it. Oy. I am probably stuck with rental CR-Xs and Altimas for the rest of my life.

And thanks for looking up that car ... it brings back fond memories.

Sorry, I glossed over that part of your name!
Not having access to a garage is pretty much a deal breaker, and "Steve in Elmont" just doesn't have to same ring to it.

And we love these 2 cars - so let's do a mashup. 2-door body, SVX but curvier, like the SHO. Flat 8 with Yamaha heads, because both cars should contribute. Take the 5-speed gearbox out of the Mustang (that I couldn't buy, because I could not get far enough from the clutch pedal with their fucking seat). Oval radio console because - it worked! AM/FM cassette and 6 CD player in the trunk (just like my SHO). Spacious back seat with armrest, sunroof, brakes big enough to stop from a stupid speed (probably from the SVX). Done. Someone needs to draw this for us.

Not a problem - there are elevator garages outside, and inside garages. Even if you don't have a car payment, you have NYC insurance costs. My dream garage? Just an Audi R8 (8 cylinder, manual) hardtop, in an indoor garage 3 blocks from my building. No V-10. No droptop. That's all I want.

Best of luck. Though I know certain professions/lifestyles demand it, those reasons are basically why I could never handle living in a large city.

This is the closest I've come to owning an SVX, so far. At least finding a place to park it isn't an issue .

I can only handle living here - mild agoraphobia, plus a need for no confrontations. This works. At least for now. Realistically, if we move out of the city, I buy this: http://www.volvocars.com/us/all-cars/vo…

You could certainly do worse. That's always been on my list of "I really like those, just not for me" cars.

The GF can't drive stick and won't let me teach her, so I think a C30 automatic is close to optimal for us both. Love the looks.

Are you kidding me? That's great! I could have had exactly what I wanted. If only Subaru had photoshopped in a 5 speed ....
