A couple things about the Express and Savana.

First of all, I can't believe these vans have been basically unchanged since 1996, that's pretty impressive (sad?). Second, I had no idea these things were available with a turbo diesel. I happened to notice it in Motor Trend's truck guide last night. I was a lot attendant for GMC for a couple summers in the late 90's and I don't recall ever seeing a diesel Savana. I assumed maybe the diesel was a newer option, but Wiki says it's been available since 1996 just like the van.

And a big block as well, though not for a while now.

Yes, well, I used to have to park several of them within inches of each other on a cramped overflow lot.

And inevitably, our fleet manager would always sell the one in the way way back.

They remained unchanged mainly because there is almost no other option on the market. That has changed

the diesel is a $7,000 option if I remember correctly.

The 8.1 liter would have been after my days on the lot, and it was so long ago that I honestly can't remember which of the four (wow, four?!) other V8's would come through. I know it was lots and lots and lots of Vortecs, but even that doesn't really narrow it down. The fleet buyers mostly cared about MPG of course.

The current generation Econoline dates back to 1992 model year. Crazy!

That might explains its scarcity.

It is nice the amount of options available though.

At my work, we have a Chevy Express in our fleet with 350k+ miles. It's still my favorite of the big vans to drive.

What else is in the fleet? Econolines? Sprinters?

We have the E-series Fords, Both Nissan NVs big and small, Ram Cargo (Caravan), and had the last generation Transit Connects which were disastrously unreliable.

For a long time, the Savana/Express was pretty much the most modern big van on the market, so GM had little incentive to change. Now, with the Transit and ProMaster, I expect we'll see Vivaro here before too long.

I had to google it. I'm guessing they don't all look like this one. (It was the first search result, haha!)

Definitely not, but that is awesome.

I still think it's only a matter of time, what with Ford and Fiat Chrysler having their modern Euro vans on the market here now.
