Then I've found something awesome for you to see! :)
It looks amazing! I believed modified Webers were used on both of these engines.

Installing carbs in place of FI seems like a cop-out to me, but they are neat!

In place of 944 FI? I don't blame them.

"yes, but why"

According to the forum I found the lead pic on, that red one is bored out to 2.8L and makes 330hp! The displacement on that one is .2L less than the 944S2/968's 3.0L that makes 208hp and 236hp respectively.

Perhaps it's a mix of carbs and a standalone ECU? If that's possible..

I imagine the train of thought was something like: "what if I made my aging porsche even MORE difficult to keep running? AND people will gather around ME at cars and coffee and not that rich douche with the ferrari. I could buy a ferrari, but who wants a ferrari, porsches are just better!"

The stock 3.0L also had to last more then a few track sessions too. Easy to make power with high-compression and camshafts that aren't ground for emissions and efficiency. That being said, it is a testament to how well Porsche designed those engines.

They're FI, just ITB's.

I just searched 944 itb to see what came up. This looks similar and is described as ITB fuel injected. It does look close to a set of Webers but enough is different. Fuel rail up top with injectors. I totally dig this set up but the money involved, even to do it with bike throttle bodies.

Damn, those look cool. I've never heard of this before, but it'd be cool to see one in action. Doesn't the second one look fuel injected, though?

Maybe it's both? Not sure..

How much would you project this to be? And how reliable would it be?

i have no idea...but a whole intake manifold for the purpose of individual throttle bodies is pricey and then the throttle bodies, lets say you go with dedicate car ones from someone like Jenvey, at lest a thousand $. install, custom fuel plumbing for them and then you have to get it tuned at a dyno somewhere because the fuel metering has to be calibrated.....etc...
money.

Individual throttle bodies. The rail on top of them is a fuel rail for the injectors.

Maybe it could be an independent throttle body setup? That's all I can think of.
