Kinja'd!!!

I found these three pieces on the garage floor underneath the Phaeton (not the quarter...that's there for size). The two pieces on the left are metal, and the piece on the right is plastic. They were beneath the area of the oil pan, roughly. Anyone know what they are??

That's what I'm thinking. Looks like a side of the endlink fell off.

A quarter?

Edit: that's what I get for not reading the whole post before snarking.

I don't know, but it's probably a $89.78 part.

It looks like you are missing the set screws in the shaft collar which is why it fell off. where it belongs I don't know but I wouldn't use the car until you find out.

Ah, thanks. You think my muffler going to fall off without it? Am I facing imminent doom?

Is that serious? Do you think I can I drive the car for awhile as-is, or do I need this taken care of right away?

Those really don't look like they would have come off the Phaeton to me.

Were they there last night, or did you only notice them when you backed out or pulled in?

I noticed them this morning as I was backing out. The thick metal piece on the left was pretty slick with oil.

On a lot of my automatic cars, there's a collar like that on the shift linkage. It acts as a stop for the shifter rod so it doesn't travel past and come off.

It might burn out the muffler a little quicker than normal, I think you should be good for at least a few months.

My parts always end up being $18, $48, $89, or $114 before discount. I think VW/Audi just sells everything at set "tiers" of price

pull your dipstick and check the oil right now. Run out of the office like a crazed man, screaming that your baby is in danger.

Then calmly walk back and deny ever doing such a weird thing.

It kind of looks like the threaded part of an oil filter, but from the photo, it doesn't look threaded to me. The piece on the left would fit over a metal rod, and would have small locking screws to hold it in place. The two other pieces look similar to a gasket setup to me, but I'm not sure for what exactly.

Any puddles or drips? For safety, throw a piece of newspaper or cardboard under the car when you put it in the garage tonight, and draw a line around the front and back of each tire for reference in case theres a drip, you can easily identify what area it came from.

If it is part of the sway bar linkage, it's pretty secure. It would most likely be a the bushing on the bottom, but I wouldn't make assumptions. Honestly, when you get home just jack the car up and start looking. I tried looking up Phaeton suspension diagrams, but nothing resembled what you found. IDK, I might have missed it. Here are a few example. I am skeptical thought, because usually sway bar bushings are much thicker. IDK, I'm trying to relate knowledge of a 40 year old car to that of a 10 year old car. Best of luck though. And, eventually I will make the trip to Katie's. I guess were looking at next year at this point.

Also, see if you can identify any pat number and give your VW dealer a ring.

Have you had any work done recently? Specifically anything involving the valve covers coming off? The cylinder on the far left - You're on your own I have no idea where that is from. Doesn't even look automotive.

what you have there is a shaft collar, and what looks like a dust cover. A shaft collar is generally used to hold a pivoting shaft in place. An example would be a turning shaft goes through a bearing then you slide on the collar and tighten the set screws so the shaft doesn't fall out. If this fell off your car I'd try to find out where, as it could lead to more parts falling off.

You aren't going to mention the high speed lug nut tape as a temporary solution?
