The badges aren't in the correct place for a 1.8T. Check for accidents.

Also, it's a late 90s VW product. Prepare for spending money on everything.

I just bought a 2000 S4 for $2900 for use as a race car. It's currently on jack stands in my garage after getting the wheels off, and needs new spark plugs, oil, and brake fluid. You can check the other threads I've done on it so far for the saga (It also needs new front axles, amongst other things)

My best friend so far is VW Slight Adjustment Tool #2.

Cool, thanks. Since he says it's got a "high performance" clutch and lowered springs, I'm guessing it's been wrenched on a fair amount. Which is probably not a good thing.

If it's wrenched on by someone who follows the procedures on Erwin religiously and has all the VW Special Tools, then it's not that bad.

But the lowered springs is a tad disconcerting. Either go to a coilover setup, or leave it as is. Same with the high performance clutch. You really don't need it with a 1.8 unless you are doing massive turbo replacements or something. My brother (the S4's previous owner) had an RS4 clutch installed, but he hasn't done enough to the motor to warrant it.

So it's tentative NP if everything is done to VW standard. If any of the workmanship is questionable and you need the car to actually work on anything resembling a normal basis, CP.

If you know someone who has Ross-Tech VCDS code reader for VWs I would highly suggest having them run a diagnostic on it before moving further. Check the suspension for worn bits, ask when the timing belt and water pump was done. The car looks very clean.

They're really solid cars, If you want a reliable B5 go for the 2.8.

That one looks like a good price though, seems clean. I've got a '97 2.8 A4 Quattro and I have few complaints/gripes.

The stock S4 clutch was like pressing a cinder block into a hole smaller than the cinder block if I recall.

It didn't get better with an RS4 clutch...

It's leagues more recalcitrant than the G35 clutch in the 2003 model I had.

But nothing compares to how light and easy the BMW clutches are...
