Between last week (or the week prior) when the year old "i8 rear looks like a 911 rear" and today's hilariously ignorant "Best budget track cars" article I have to ask who keeps sharing these terrible stories out of everything else on Oppo. I know not everything is amazing but maybe if the comments are full of people not liking the post......maybe it shouldn't go to the front? Just a thought?
Patrick, be honest, is this revenge for making those gifs out of your appearance on RCR?

I don't think so. Where is this misconception of that you need an exotic for a track day? This is fucking Oppositelock. This is the last place to be expecting the misconception (if there even is one) that you only need an exotic for a track day. It's total bull crap, anybody who has an ounce of desire to do a track day isn't going to be thinking, "Fuck, I need a Porsche if I'm going to do a track day."

As much as I agree that the list of vehicles provided for best "budget" track cars is, well, anything but budget minded. You need to dial back the rhetoric. The underhanded insult toward the staff and direct criticisms of the budget post creator are toeing the line regarding behavior we spelled out in the handbook.
we strongly discourage people from making posts attacking other commenters or communities, starting inter-forum pissing contests, and purposefully picking fights with people you don't get along with.
There are ways you can voice this without coming across quite so aggressively while still communicating exactly what you are displeased with. Try to keep that in mind in the future.

I wish I could find the reference (I think it was on mainline Gawker) where - about 2-3 weeks ago - one of the well-known editors replied the exact thing that you just did. link, captioned "Shut up about clickbait." - same capitalization and punctuation and all.
the problem with that article's premise is that it asserts that the definition of clickbait is "things people like to read". not so - clickbait is a specific technique of withholding a critical bit of information, forcing people to follow a link. it has nothing to do with how "self-serious" newspapers are. it's the specific making me jump through hoops. it's the equivalent of "article continues on page 142".

To be fair to to Gawker net many other sites are far worse. Been to Forbes.com recently? Expect to click to continue after viewing an ad. How about Elsewhere on the web links many pages do. It pops open another tab with a dozen or more clickbait articles and then you have to clink the original link again going to yet another page that will yet again be covered in clickbait.

On your first point – I am not an original writer. I'm working on it, maybe one day. I really wish I could expose a vast conspiracy, but not even my boss's emails stay private. I doubt a company-wide policy would go unnoticed.
On your second point – we try to interest you in reading the story, that's true, yet at the same time telling you what happened. We can't include every single detail in the headline, otherwise it wouldn't be a headline, it would just be an article. But we do try to get you the most pertinent facts in there, while still persuading you to click through the article. (If wanting people to read my full articles, and not simply the headlines, is a crime, then I'm a goddamn criminal.)
But if we don't get to what you feel is a critical piece of information until the very bottom, then that's our fault for burying the lede . If you feel we glossed over an important detail, feel free to mention it and talk about it in the comments – there's a good chance we'll join in the conversation with you if we feel you raise salient points.
But yeah, at the end of the day, we're limited to roughly 70 characters in the headline and 330 characters in the lede paragraph (thanks Kinja). We try our best under the circumstances.
Next time you feel that I write a "clickbait" headline and lede, why don't you suggest a new one? Remember, it's got to fall within the rules of both journalism and post formatting. So it has to 1) Be informative 2) Be persuasive 3) Have the headline at 70 characters maximum and 4) Have the lede under 330 characters.
Have a crack at it, you can't do any worse than me.
Strange Noises Alou

fair enough. I just happen to find that article insufferably stupid - and I think it's definitely diminishing the quality of discourse that all the staff members at Gawker are, in my perception anyway, knee-jerk copying and pasting a link to it every time someone criticizes them for engaging in clickbait techniques.
I will agree that the headlines here are significantly better than "10 surprising ways to increase your penis size - #4 will make you laugh, cry, AND blow chunks!" that the vast majority of the internet has seemingly migrated to. I just think that, if you have a strong and well-reasoned stance (see comment to which I am replying), you should probably let that stand front-and-center, as opposed to parroting that idiotic, muddled article that does not even appear to be in line with Gawker Media's headline-writing standards.

Well as PG said- apparently they only share if you email? But at the same time why would they share articles where obviously the comments are against the OP? He said "it facilitated discussion".....YES IT DID BY US TEARING HIM A NEW ONE SO WHY PUT IT ON THE FRONT PAGE?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!
Between this and the seemingly weekly "controversy" of a post, I have no desire to psot regularly on Oppo anymore. For some of these idiots that makes them breathe a sigh of relief. But it makes me sad to lose a place I hoped I could call home.

Not true about the email. I've had 3 articles FP'd and I didn't email about a single one. It's just what the authors think is "interesting" and "controversial." It's kinda ruining the FP. They seem to be getting a bit more lazy and the FP is going down hill as a result.

Okay I had to wait until I had the much more civil words but hear me out for a second- you shared a page that had a lot of very negative comments on it. I understand there was a discussion, but why not write up a brief "ask us" post instead? It comes across as either laziness where you just read the title and said "Yup, front page!" or as being out of touch with what has been happening in Oppo lately. A lot of people are very angry at one another for various reasons. Some legit, some not. By promoting an article to the FP, you are giving that person encouragement for their article. But when you encourage what the community has deemed a "bad" article? You are doing nothing but a disservice to Oppo and Jalopnik. Did you actually read the comments or the article? A lot of people are very angry at him for being the stereotype we all want to extinguish. He drives a tuned evo, talks like everyone has a spare 15-30k (which is what he has lying around for his engine rebuilds every year OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH) and was a totla dick to everyone bringing up their own cheap cars about how they don't count for arbitrary reasons! I'm sorry for being worked up into a bile-filled rage but this si the type of person who drives away page views and visits because, afetr all "Oh, jalopnik is that place for ricers and idiots to talk shit in the comments about crappy posts". And before you go saying "Well don't read it" I think you might want to keep an eye on those page views because it won't belong before people go elsewhere. This is a problem that has been ongoing for over a month and this is the first time I made a comment on it. I am not alone. Do what you think is best but be careful. This is a very fragile community right now.

I know that, I didn;t have the time to put that point across as multiplecars that time forgot articles were FP'd without my consent or permission. But yes, the FP is being tainted very rapidly. As I said to PG, okay tell us to not visit......but watch those page views plummet as this community dies out quickly. I feel like there is a wekely controversy about BS and it has made it not fun to write on oppo anymore between the controversies and daily "URRRRR I DONT UNDERSTAND OWMEN" rants by teenagers.......
Oppo has become livejournal for people with a passing interest in cars.

So go into the comments and disagree with him. That's what comments are for. It's a discussion, like at a dinner party. We're not all going to agree and that's okay — there's never really going to be a consensus here or anywhere. Plus, Promo's a big boy, he can defend his point of view.
As for OppositeLock, Oppo is its own thing and always will be. And should be! Just because Jalopnik shares a story doesn't do a disservice to Oppo.
And like I said, email us at tips@jalopnik.com if you see a story that really belongs on the FP. We check in to Oppo a lot but we grind and we often miss stuff.

We did speak out against him. I seem to be one of the few who got dismissed and he seemed to have very little to say after that. He un-dmismissed it much later but as I and a few others called him out on it, he gave up. But that isn't quite the point I'm trying to get at. The focus was on the fact that Oppo is not the same as it was just a few months ago. There have been several temporary bans and lots of outright hostilities involving other boards that, in all truth, did warrant the temporary bans and whatnot. I'm not arguing that. However, I would ask that you consider that people have been at each other's throats in disagreement a lot more than usual and keep that in consideration before promoting an article that seems to provoke such negative comments and "discussion".
I will freely admit that, as someone who came from the detroit area and used to be part of a large "car club" that basically ran the street racing scene on woodward and the like, my opinion of the poster is different than the rest. I will not dox him and I'll do my best to keep it private, but I will be frank and say that seeing his article with his hate filled comments hit the front page angered me on a personal level. I will not share my personal opinions of him outside of the fact that they are negative, but judging by some of the responses, it angered others too. I did indeed spread the bile and anger because I am not a fan of how he represents the automotive community. But to see it spread as it did, while filling me with glee, does not do Oppo or Jalopnik any favors. You cheapened both boards by haring it in my opinion and it's looking like others did too.
I guess what I would like to see considered is the following - read the comments before you do a share. Whether or not it was requested, check and see what the general consensus is of those in Oppo commenting. Discussion is not always a good thing. Lots of comments that are angry at the article will mean you will only get more angry comments when it is shared. This means more people draw their lines in the sand and the community in general takes another hit. At least, that's my impression and my opinion.

Mine list, hypothetically, would include cupholders in FRONT OF or BESIDE the shifter, which is the better place. kept elbowing my drink in my RX-8 but my 2000 Focus had the cupholders in front, easy to reach without contorting my arm...
Goodness, I'm taking this cupholder shit too seriously...

There's nothing "fragile" about this community. We're stronger than ever, but there are a lot of dissenting viewpoints, which leads to what appears to be factions of people taking sides over opinions. This has happened before and will happen again.
If people leave, they leave. Some will come back, others will be replaced. It's the circle of Oppo. =)
