QOTD basically asks: "What is a good fun commuter car that is good on gas and has decent amenities and reliability?" (Also the guy is looking in the 5k range)

Comments section:

"1990s V8 Luxobarges!"

"Brand new BMW 7 Series!"

"Brand new Audi RS5!"

"A Lincoln Mk VII!"

"A brand new spankin Lexus LS600h!"

Are these people just stupid or do they live in a world where "good on gas" translates into buying the most expensive, gas guzzling, luxury cars for use as a basic commuter car?

The only sensible comment in the whole section was the MR2s.

Well to be fair, Patrick did remove the $5K limit for the QOTD.

Hahah, it just frustrates me when people don't even READ the question. If those comments were playing around then fine, I understand, but some of them I think really were being seriously ignorant.

Mostly tears from laughter, but still.

I posted the Lexus.

And no, I didn't read the entire article. Obviously. I would have posted something less expensive, like an original LS.

Commuting isn't just about hyper-miling. I posted the Lexus LS because if you're going to have to spend all fucking day in your car, you might as well have a nice play to sit. And the question was not, "What Car That Isn't Utter Shit Gets The Best Gas Mileage?"

Patrick asked what the best car for a long commute is. Best for me means having a really nice place to drive for that long. Best for you clearly means uses no fuel.

Calm down.

The only reason I'm so positive of my answer was I commuted from 40 - 75 miles one way every weekday for two years and I used several different cars and this was the best at everything. Not the best overall, the best in every single category. It was the most fun, the most reliable, the safest, the most efficient. It was perfect and I miss it dearly.

I took the question to mean "in general" and not "For Justin specifically", since he removed the price cap and simply asked what would be the best fun car for a long commute.

Swap out the Air ride on a MK VII and there's not much to go wrong. They are comfortable as fuck, which will make up for the 22 mpg on the highway.

Excuse me for suggesting a good DD.

Well now it's about less than 10 miles one day and tons of backroad options if I so choose so I use an NA Miata. Even on long driving commutes an NA Miata would not be a terrible choice.

Kinja'd!!!2

I do 90 miles a day.

Based on my experience in that regard I can say with authority that most of these answers are colossally stupid.

Fuel prices alone will cut you off at the knees. Then you have to factor in reliability. I don't know I'd REALLY trust anything built before 2004 to be up for that day after day. Sure "the engines last forever" but suspension parts wear, hoses get brittle, electrical parts heat cycle, and so on. You need to actually arrive at work or school on time. "Hero points" should not be a concern.

I would say 2004 Jetta TDI 5-spd.

So that's the question of the day: What's the best fun car for a 100 mile daily commute?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Justin's budget is $5000, but I'll broaden the question to include any price tag.

Did you read the question?

2004 Jetta TDI wagon is the ultimate high mileage commuter for people on a budget.

Yes I did read the "include any price tag". Even then, those aren't good answers. Not everyone is made of money like you might be. Any price tag does not equal most expensive toy you can afford to commute 100 miles in.

I suggested spending all the money on the best Civic/Accord/Fit/Yaris/Corolla/Scion/Camry you can find.

You've already got your fun car, get something sensible.

I also suggested using the opportunity to go through as many beaters as you could, like Azteks, so what the fuck do I know?

Would need AC, radio, good mileage, all weather, and need to be cheap to run.

I would do the same thing. If you want to impress people at the office, drive the BMW in on Fridays or wear BMW shirts, ties, jackets, etc..

Man, the VW hate around here is out of control! I have owned mostly VW products for my sporty second car (have a minivan for family stuff, like a good suburban father) and I have never been left stranded by one. Right now I am driving a 2003 Jetta GLI with the 24v VR6 engine. It is coming up on 250,00 miles. Yes 1/4 million and it is running just fine.

They have their issues, but considering how far ahead of the times they were with their technology (they really mainstreamed the 4 cyl turbo for daily use with the 5 valve per cylinder 1.8 turbo on the MkIV) I think they should be given a pass. If the same exact models had Alfa badges on them dudes would be singing their praises from the rooftops.
