'56 Maserati for your time.

Driving home yesterday I got on 97N from the Rt50 East exit and came upon a newer light blue VW Passat resting against the southbound side of the guardrailing, steam pouring out from under the hood. I pulled over (with other vehicles) and got on the phone with 911. Walking towards the car, I passed a gentleman in an F250 and asked "what's going on?", to which I got "I dunno". I asked if he had called 911, and he said "no, but I think someone else did". THIS IS HOW PEOPLE DIE . Never assume "someone else" is calling 911. You need to confirm someone has called or call yourself. Apparently the driver (older woman) became disoriented and hit a few cars further north on 97, and finally hit the guardrail and rode it for a few hundred feet before coming to a halt. People were screaming to have her shut the car off and put it in park, and one brilliant person decided to use a baseball bat to smash her rear windshield in an attempt to get inside the car to shut it off. This was fucking stupid. The last thing you want to do to someone who is disoriented and confused (with a possible medical emergency) is to smash a window on their car. After she shut the car off emergency services arrived and I left, along with a few other cars. Up 97 a few miles I did see a Ford Focus with the front fascia torn away, so I'm assuming that's one of the cars she hit.

Baseball bat would only have been acceptable if (a) the car wasn't already disabled and (b) the driver was showing signs of further erratic behavior, not just disconnect and bewilderment. Or, (c), driver completely unresponsive. In a case in which there is an immediate and impending danger of responders being run the fuck over, making sure the car gets stopped makes sense, but only then. Say, the driver is shifting gears and trying to get unstuck already, a very long stretch indeed. I suspect Bat Boy was applying the hammer/nails approach on having the object in his car, more so than anything rational. Dumbass.

so the guy in the f250 stopped, but didn't call 911?

yeah the baseball bat was a stupid idea too. Cars and engines can be replaced, people and minds are a much more fragile thing

Honestly if you are in the city you can safely assume someone has called 911.

Boo and hiss. Always confirm someone has called 911. If not able to confirm, you call 911. The dispatcher told me I was the 3rd person who called. I would rather be the 10th caller in than the person that didn't make the call.

No, not really. You'd be surprised at how many people either don't think to call, or assume someone else already has. He was right to call, because then he knows 911 was contacted. The worst that could happen by him calling is they say "Someone already called, thanks." The worst that could happen by someone not calling is someone potentially getting injured because a cop or ambulance isn't there to properly handle the situation.
