I wonder what rear suspension is on these silly things. (I pay little attention to VW products).

Do they use leaf springs old school style? there can't be enough room back there for them.

I'm trying to figure out how this even happened.

Probably a pair of struts. Beefier springs or a spacer would accomplish this.
