from the VWoA facebook page, taken at H20i. Dude I sold it to did a damn fine job - and kept the square headlights! I only knew it from the rust pattern on the tailgate and the rims. Awesome

I'd have put a pancake motor in the back.

I might ought to see where mine is now, but I don't know if I could. If it shed the Leer fiberglass cap, got new bumper end caps, and got a proper repaint, it'd be pretty much indistinguishable from any other - and those were all things it needed. The Leer cap was worth keeping, but was sealed with a metric ton of caulk, so would have been coming off at some point.

Nice! I've got a JH engine and 020 transaxle kicking around in my shed. Always thought that it'd be fun to drop it into one of those and make a Caddy GTI. The only ones you see here have almost completely dissolved, though.

yeah I sold mine with the cap. I remember you commenting yours did too when I posted about it. Just glad this thing got saved. Made some loot on it too!

yeah I was surprised about this one. I bought it for pennies from a friend and sold it shortly thereafter. It was a diesel but man did it rip for 60 hp. 90 from a period GTI would be nuts. They do rot like hell though up here as well

Mine went for $2k at 242,000 miles, so I didn't take a hit on it. It had one or two places of light surface scuff rust underneath and a warped drip edge, but the body was in the main straight. It had working factory air, but getting it that way was a real biznatch.

Not as much as you'd think, but the Real Ultimate Top Speed Test of 83 diesel mph was on a day with it off, natch.

lol I bet it was off. At least there wasn't much interior volume to cool. Not like the 78-79 busses with a/c!

Yeah, it was nicely fresh inside on days that were not the days before I recharged it, or the days after I took a pebble to the condenser.
