Recently, it's started to shake and sputter upon startup. For the first couple miles of driving, it feels like it's stalling, and the shaking is particularly bad at idle. But once the engine warms up and it gets going, it begins to perform fine. I'll park it overnight, and the whole process will repeat itself the next morning.
I'm going to take it to the shop just as soon as I can find the time. But I thought you Jalops might have an idea of what's going on. This hasn't happened before. For the past 15 years and 130K miles, it's been perfectly reliable.

Coils, plugs, fuel injectors, bad gas, o2 sensors, vacuum leaks

It's not a Subaru Legacy.

Good list of things to check. I'd just add a dirty MAF sensor as a possible suspect.

It's been setting off an O2 sensor fault code for years now. But a mechanic once told me it wasn't even worth addressing. Perhaps I shouldn't have listened to that mechanic...

It's given up on living after realizing how much cooler the Phaeton is.

I will say, that other than the Galant VR4, that generation looks best.

Get the torque pro app and the obdII connector. You can then see if the O2 sensors are doing their jobs right.

My twin brother actually has a Subaru Legacy, which I told him to buy. He had a Camry before that.

If we assume that he's done his 100k maintenance which includes tune up, belts and water pump, then I think it is most likely electronic.

That sounds exactly like what happened when the MAF sensor went out on my Hyundai Accent. Is the check engine light on?

Yep, it is. It came on when this started happening.

I would suspect that the ECT (engine coolant temperature sensor) is dead. With japanese cars they usually use a thermistor which is a temperature variable resistor. "In negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensors, the internal resistance will decrease as the temperature rises (and vice versa)."-Wiki
So the ECU sends 5 volts to the sensor and when it get low voltage back indicating high resistance and an already warmed up engine it won't get proper choke/startup fueling. Once the engine gets up to a temperature that matches the broken sensors resistance it will run fine. So my advice is find sensor, see if it is broken etc, test sensor using ohm meter against specs on internet for that make model and engine type. I imagine now that it is getting colder it will be more difficult to start and will take longer to be normally driven. I had this happen once on my Integra and just recently came to the same diagnosis on a Camry. In the integra the wiring broke off and with the Camry the sensor harness contact body snapped off. What Arch Duke said, the OBDII sensors you can get Bluetooth ones for less than $10 and get free apps or one for less than $3. you can actually see A/F Ratios, CEL codes, etc. Other than that, what he initially suggested and MAF, you could also have bad gas. Did you by any chance got to a different station?

I thought it might be bad gas, but I've filled up three times since the problem started, and it's still happening.

Did you recently have any work done to it? Last time my car stuttered like that turned out the air box pinched the air filter, so the sensor was trying to make up for too much air. Good luck with whatever it may be, hopefully it is a simple sensor or less
