I drove next to an M4 last night. It does not sound like you'd expect from an M car by any means. And the guy was driving it kinda hard.

At least there were DSG farts to make up for it. Nothing like a good DSG fart. Maybe one's own farts. That's a topic for another day, though. DSG farts don't sound good to me. It's the sound your left foot makes when it falls asleep. (Shots fired)

For street use, I think I would prefer the M Performance Exhaust. However, that does sound excellent.

Definitely! All of the performance exhausts sound so good for the last gen cars. Just listen to this 330i.

Long interview by the head of M - takeaway is that the choice to go with turbos was not one that they wanted to make necessarily, it's one they had to make (for emissions). Says that NA will be left to exotics from here on (and American muscle, I guess). Glad I got my "exotic" V8 while I could...

Awesome that he feels that way! It's very different and far more refreshing than the "vee need mah tech" that porsche engineers go around waving in the air. Your M3 is certainly the last of an era. An awesome, awesome era.

Some guys even point to the crappy fuel economy as a point of pride, saying it proves that they were purely focused on performance during development, making no compromises. It's a hell of a piece, though. With the tune, mine winds out to 8600...

Wow... 8600 from that screaming little V8 sounds insane! I don't take my car over 4000 RPM, but there's really no point given the powerband. There's nothing like top end thrust like that, though. And I think the whole "no compromises" thing is what made an M car an M car.
