The only other engine that i can think of that comes close to being as bad as a rotary is on the street vs as good as it is on a track is the 426 Hemi.

There is a way to make them reliable. Follow maintenance, add 2 stroke oil in the tank, put heavier oil weight. 5w20 is RIDICULOUS for rotaries.

there was Wankel. Wankel learned about all types of engines. On the 1st day he learned about steam engines, on the 2nd day he learned about combustion engines and saw that they were good. On the third day he made a rotary, and it was not good. Luckily on the fourth day Hanns Dieter Paschk made a rotary and it WAS good.

By the eleventeeth day the DKM 54 was produced and made 21hp.

Paschk then commanded: Go forth DKM 54 and multiply. Fill the hoods of Mazda and NSU Ro 80's with various iterations of the rotary engine. And it was good.

But then a snake appeared and said "Rotary, eat this apex seal, and your life will be better. Mechanics will pay attention to you, you will be become an exotic" ....and verily the rotary did eat thy apex seal which Wankel himself had forbidden. "I am naked!!!" the rotary cried. Thus the Rotary was taken to the mechanic and given new seals. But the original sin remained.

However rotary like man cannot turn back the clock and over come original sin, and thus are cursed to lose their apex seals from now until the end of time.
