I have an idea. I have the opportunity to purchase the wheels shown below. They are 14x5s from a 2000cs. My current wheels are 13x4.5s. So, they are an upgrade, but still relatively small. Anyway, I was on the BMW 2002 FB page and a member, who owns the car above, said that he took these wheels, and put them in a 15x7.5 barrel. What does this mean. Is it a 3 piece wheel now? What does it take to do this? I have a hard-on right now for what he's done to his wheel and I would really like to have something similar. Any ideas?

The jist of it is that they cut the face off of the wheel, and reweld it onto a larger center section (barrel).

Took the inner web of the wheel, put them in an outer wheel with larger rim size. It can be done, if the outer diameter of the inner web is a size they have an outer part ("barrel") for. It's partly just a question of how deep the center mounting groove is.

They cut the barrel and widen it in the middle usually.
This is a pretty drastic example but the fresh metal has been welded in to widen the wheel. Usually it's only by a couple inches.

What Dukie said.
But I'm just dropping by to say those wheels look awesome.

So, wouldn't this just result in a wider wheel?

Gotcha, so take the center and weld to different ends.

That's what I'd thought he meant at first, but since this was also an upgrade from 14" to 15", I took it to mean in this case a swap of rim on his webs.

In this case. Normally, barreling would be what others have said, widening an existing wheel. I provided the definition here because it's more likely what actually happened. Webs get reused and moved to fresh exteriors all the time - at one time Wheel Vintiques required that you send in cores to get fresh baby moon style steelies. They'd save the webs and trash the outers.

I would say don't bother since the 14s look great as they are.

looks more like old school "reversing". Cut the center out flip it and reweld it. This is do it yourself mod because hardly any shops will touch this due to liability concerns

I know, I really want to do this. Get the chrome lip ring and the hubs. Ohh, it would look awesome. Then I'd just move on to purchasing the shorty bumpers and removing my lower side molding and unnecessary reflectors. And euro side markers.

The guy apparently was making 15s out of 14s, so the whole rim section was fresh and I suspect whatever width/offset he wanted. I have to guess money no object.

That's the plan, I just hope that money tree I planted in my back yard continues to grow throughout the winter.

You can also increase diameter with stepped lip barrels this way.

What he said. My coworker just bought a similarly done set for his 122S:

Why? If you're going to remove one of the cars' best features, just buy a 510.

I'm kind of a moron when it come to this, but wouldn't that reduce the strength of the wheel considerably?

I didn't do this. You know that's not what it looks like when you take out the kidney. And yes, the car is quite lackluster when you remove the kidney.

Not really. The mounting groove depth varies between different wheels, and a 1" diameter difference wouldn't have a significant effect on the web's stresses alone. The web is already welded or riveted in place into the original outer, so putting it in a different one the same way makes no difference... if it's done properly. If you get a shitty weld, or a bad rivet job, or the web is old with some stress fractures you can't see and gets shaped just *slightly* differently to a new rim, something bad could happen. Not likely, but possible.

Not all BMWs, obviously. I own an early 2002, and the grilles, to me, are one of the most distinctive parts of the car. Without them, as in those pictures, it just looks generic & bland from the front.

I know you didn't. They just don't look right to me without them, especially the early cars.
