Without needing to see the ultimate data, I can tell you right now that Oppositelock is trending much, much younger than it has ever been. Due to the nature of your survey and it being on a website like this, good luck getting accurate data; there's just no real way to do so, no matter what approach you take.

agreed, and that is my gut feeling about trending lower. I don't see alot of new faces around here that are 25+ (or seem to be).

One thing I do give us credit for here is education. Someone was doing their job raising these kids. I see less grammatical errors here than what I see on my local news, or even in FP articles. Go school!

It's the little things, I suppose. Fewer grammatical errors is nice, but ultimately I'd like to see more in the way of in-depth thought and perspective, something that Oppositelock has always been a little short of outside of comparing and contrasting automotive-related topics.

I agree 100% on this, but I don't know a good plan of action to entice these sorts of conversations. I mean I do it often enough in person, sometimes to my detriment due to the people involved. You would think a generally positive forum such as this would naturally lend itself to this type of tone, but I think the fleeting nature of kinja blogs in general allow a lot to be swept under the rug with posts lacking substance. The popular posts bar in the left was a good start, but the algorithm isn't dialed in enough. As soon as something goes FP the staying power in the sidebar is real, whereas a non FP'ed post, as good as it is, is lost within at most 2 hours. We are trying with Oppositeblog.kinja.com to give staying power to the substantial posts and discussions, but there isn't much traffic over there as of yet.

Oppo needs to get it's own "Related Blogs" list us users can more easily keep track of the good ones. As it stands there is no easy way to find them other than people mentioning them on or them being shared to Oppo/Jalopnik (at least not that I know of, kinja though is a mysterious beast)

I suppose that it's not necessarily the lack of "quality" posts that is a huge issue for me; I'm generally fine with a swath of whatever posts. What bothers me, more than anything else, is the general lack of maturity that has shown up here for the past six months or so. It's gotten to be impressively bad of late, and it's costing Oppositelock as a whole. I don't think that the influx of significantly younger new commenters has been the cause of it per se, but I will go so far as to say that there is some degree of correlation.

As with anything, however, there is just as much good as there is bad, and it's been nice to see Oppositelock grow. What we need to focus on now is making sure it grows in the right direction.
