My dad has just gone and pissed me right the fuck off again.
So the GT40P heads came today, but I had to get them shipped to my work, which is bad because I work for my dad. They arrived this morning while I was in class, and apparently my dad was there when they came in. I called my work after class inquiring if they came in, my co-worker answered and said they were in and as soon as I said I'd be on the way to get them after lunch, my dad had taken the phone and started bitching me out for ordering them without his permission. PERMISSION?? I don't need your permission to order a set of heads with my own damn money! I'm also extremely pissed because he saw it as necessary to open MY package. I had to make an excuse that they were for my fabrication lab to learn the machines and skills there(which they kinda are in some ways); he seemed to half-believe it. And then he goes off about how he thinks I'm fooling around and not actually studying and focusing on school this semester, even when I'm studying at least 3 times more than I've ever done in my life and last semester. And then he says we'll have a talk about it later, fuck that.
So here I was about to use my free time on a secret project I was gonna surprise him with in the future, but NOPE, not even gonna try to do a nice thing for him again. So as soon as I pick up the heads, I'm gonna put them up for sale and use the money for myself. Why do I even bother anymore..
GT40P heads arrived, dad discovered them, bitches me out on the phone, pisses me off, thinking about selling his "future gift"(probably will because fuckit)

As a son, and a father, this was the first thing I thought. If you are accepting money from the old man, you gotta live by his rules. My advice, buckle down, do good in school and get your own place when you graduate and get a job.

Or buy car parts under the table so the old man doesn't know about it and when he finally finds out (which he will) own up to it like a man.

My mom's paying for everything basically, my dad hasn't done shit financially for college and just sits around bitching about it and how he thinks I'm not trying hard enough. All he does is ask how my grades are, that's the absolute maximum he's done in the last year, he's never even visited the fucking campus!

He doesn't care about the shit he gives me! He never remembers at all, he just moves on in life. It's fucking bullshit. Even if I showed him the complete result, I know his response would be something along the lines of "you were wasting your money on this in college? Why don't you ever save your money? This is why you never have any money."
Fuck that. I'm just done with it.

This. Your dad just wants whats best for you. He thinks that those heads aren't the best use of your money, even if you earned it yourself. More likely than not he wants you to learn good money management skills, and how to set money aside instead of blowing everything you own on car parts that you want rather than need.
Had you consulted him, it most likely would have gone over much more smoothly, even if you couldn't get him on board all the way. Hell, I still consult my dad about stuff I'm thinking of buying even though I've graduated from college 2 years ago and have been living on my own making a decent salary. Pretty sure he'd kill me if I went ahead and did something stupid like *cough*buy a 3rd car*cough*.
Just talk it over with him tonight.

Keep the heads, do the project.
It's half a dad's job to test our patience and push us to our limits.
Do what you have to do to cover your ass, but don't give up the project. You'll gain a wealth of knowledge from it, and on top of that, when he finally sees what it's for, he'll probably lighten up a little bit. It'll take a long time, and it wont be the first or last time something like this happens, but do yourself a favor, and don't throw in the towel over something this trivial.
My dad used to tell me there would be a million mexicans to take my job away from me, I'd never be good enough, and I was never going to work in computers.
I'd be a much shittier position if I threw in the towel the first ten times I heard that.

My father was the same way with me when I was your age. And yes, I felt the same way as you. My advice to you (coming from someone who has let things go to far in the past and had to work hard to make things right), don't be brash, don't fly off the handle, in the end, it's never worth it. I am sure your father is a reasonable and intelligent man, if you remain calm and present him a reasonable, well thought argument as to why you should be able to spend your money without scrutiny, he may be more willing to let you make your own decisions and maybe, just maybe, he may let you in on some valuable insight as to why he feels your expenditure was a bad idea.
Like I said, I've walked in your shoes before, and I am not trying to make assumptions or anything here, just saying, I made some mistakes that I woefully regretted and had to make things right, which took A LOT.

Reasonable? HA! We're talking about the person that picked the FoST because it came with Goodyear tires because any other tire is rubbish, yet runs Dunlop Sports on his 911; the same person doesn't really ever allow me any time off from work because that's wrong; the person that through a shit-fit because I wanted time off work this semester to spend more time studying??
And he's "reasonable", my ass. And don't even get me started with his 1950-80s intelligence/mentality.

Well, we're in very similar boats, my dad just turns 70 next year.
Go easy on him, he's just doing what he knows. It's probably how he grew up, and that would have been a very different time. Just remember, in one ear, out the other. You're pissed, that's fine. You have a hobby, and you're learning something from it. Whether he chooses to see that or not isn't your problem.
I bought $300 headphones. Trust me, my dad just reached a point when he simply asked me if I thought it was worth it. I bought them didn't I?

So your father and mine are related then?
When I turned 16 all I wanted was a car of my own, I had worked my ass off (I even owned my own "company" back then, mowing lawns, but it was all legal and legit) and saved about 7 grand for a car. I was told I could not spend more than $2,000 on my first car becasue that's how much he spent on his first car (ignoring the fact that that was over 30 years prior, and this new thing called inflation).
Trust me, we had every argument, every fight, said everything you could think of, and then I left. It didn't take long to see that there were lots of things he was right about (or right-ish). We still don't always see eye to eye, and we still catch an argument from time to time (even though I live on the opposite side of the country and only see him 2 - 3 times a year), but if I could go back and take back half the things I ever said or did out of spite or anger, I would.
I'm not saying you're not right, I'm just saying I've walked that road and I would hate to see you make the same mistakes I did.

I know how that is. My mom is totally nuts, and often does crazy shit that pisses other people off, that she thinks is totally justified. I had a particularly big blow-up with her one thanksgiving and didn't speak to her for a couple years. We've since reconciled and now she's on her best behavior—relatively speaking—with me. Instead, she's now directing the exact same playbook at my little sister.
That said, playing the "the thing you're not happy about me buying was supposed to be a surprise gift for you" card is surprisingly effective. He may not feel bad but at least he might not be irrationally pissed at you anymore.

I do have a 944, why you ask?
I was gonna try to(emphasis on TRY) build him the Mustang he always wanted as a gift and a ;earning experience for myself. I bought a short block for $100 and got a set of GT40P heads in decent condition for $98. My friend has a large basement at his apartment and we were gonna build the motor there, and when we had more money and time, find a Mustang roller to drop it in, clean it up and surprise him with a couple years down the road.
I am now having second thoughts about this.

It's a good sentiment, but you're doing it at the wrong stage in your life. You already have a full plate. Adding to it will just mean you have to leave more behind of everything else. After college? Even if you don't have you own place, then you can probably start it then. For now, you are just going to cut into whatever free time you have that could be spent on your 944, any clubs, the Focus, studying, etc....And it not only will eat time, it will eat money. Both of which are in short supply during your college years.

See? You have a full plate and you keep trying to add to it. Take a step back. Have you made a budget of your finances for this project? Or any projects? Learn the lesson now before it bites you in the ass as an adult. You'll get out of this one with no real harm done.

It just never feels full. I hadn't calculated the finances for this at all, I was just going to do it as whenever spare time and money was available to do so...

Step 1) Find out what "Spare money" you actually have. Step 2) Find out how much "spare time" you actually have. College is only going to get more intense after freshman year. Step 3) Figure out what's important and what isn't. Yes, building cars is awesome but if you can only spend say 8 hours a week working on your own project(s), any time you spend on one is time not spent on another. Ditto with storage space for parts, money for parts and tools, etc.... Step 4) execute plans.

You keep looking at these things as negatives. But look at it in a different light - you can have 4 failures or 2 successes. You come across as someone who wants to actually *do* something to compeltion but, for one reason or another, you haven't done so yet. First of all, you're young so that's to be expected. Second of all, part of growing up is to learn from past mistakes. Emphasis being that you made a mistake in the first place. There's a key line you need to pick up on in a previous comment I made. "Learn the lesson now before it bites you in the ass as an adult. You'll get out of this one with no real harm done." No one is going to be all "Oh look, there's K-roll who couldn't rebuild and restore a mustang from the ground up! Let's all e-point and e-laugh! *lol lol lol*". Whatever you do, you're the one who has to live with your decisions. If you want to do this, then make your budget and see how much money and time you have. Maybe you can afford this/ I don't know. But you don't either. So, start with step 1 and go from there.

I promise I had as many of these fights with my parents, everyone does. It's what they're their for.
Now, I read through the majority of these comments and you decided maybe you should return the 302 stuff or sell it off because you don't have time. I know it sucks but it sounds like you're dad was kind of right about the situation. Sure he approached it in a not so great manner, but in the long term you might look back and go...wow...maybe he was right.
Deep breath
next time buy GT40 not GT40P heads...
(sorry 5.0 guy over here lol, I bought a pair of E7's for the Montego which had GT40 valves/springs in them for like 60 bucks. Held onto them for a year and said fuck it I like the car as is and sold em for 100. Maybe you'll make a few bucks off the deal)

Well it's not a matter of returning, I payed for all of the stuff I have with my own money. It's a matter of selling the heads now. The block isn't gonna be worth much so I'm keeping that for sure. How much could I get for the heads? They were kinda given to me for free.

Search CL first to see what others are listing them for. Are they ready to bolt on, fully build? Pic?
GT40P are a tad less desirable than straight up GT40 heads. Re done ones on CL in Metro Detroit can run anywhere from 250 to 400 a set.
http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/pts/471194…
http://detroit.craigslist.org/wyn/pts/463883…
So the first one is rebuilt brand new ready to rock
second is used but not for too long (they claim lol) and is down at 250.
