Kinja'd!!!

This is going to be a mix of car pictures and story time, because Hayley has a better story than any car I have ever owned. The story is one of the biggest reasons I bought her.

Kinja'd!!!

Hayley during a harder time in her life.

Hayley was bought new by the town of Andover, Massachusetts. She still wears the seal of the town on her roof, which is actually sort of remarkable for reasons that will soon be apparent. What the town purchased her for, I’m not really sure. I do hope to find that out, and if anyone knows a really good way of going about that, please let me know.

Kinja'd!!!

Town seal, Andover, Massachusetts.

Anyway, after that it was sold to a farmer, and he used it like a tractor as you can see in the picture, and often stacked cord wood directly onto the roof, which resulted in the funky dents in the roof. How the seal didn’t get taken completely off is beyond me. Before too long the seal is getting a flat clear put over it.

These are the pictures from where it was found, the first being the barn it was in in Dublin, NH, and the second is the car itself.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

May have to tilt your screen, but she’s back there.

Anyway the third owner buys it and goes nuts. Pulls the body off, completely restores the underside. The snow in the previous pictures may have been an indication, but I live in rust country big time. He replaced the pans and POR-15’d the hell out of everything. The transaxle is a built Rancho unit with a Rhino case, Super Beetle first gear, welded 3rd and 4th gear, and a Super Beetle diff. The 1200cc 36 HP engine was replaced with a 1600 ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ! my engine matches my car! I feel like a Honda scene kid!) but eventually I’d like to build a 2110 for it. Anyway he does all that and a lot more stuff to it.

One day my friend posts an ad for his ‘70 Beetle for sale. In the background just so happens to be my 1968 Chrysler Town & Country,

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

He messages me and asks if I want to trade for, I forget what year, but a ragtop car with a Wankel swap, 13b I believe. It was a pretty major project and I don’t need one of those. He says something about a hoodride and that got my attention. That Hoodride is the car I would come to know as my Hayley.

Esmeralda says goodbye to Hunter, one last time.

Fast forward to yesterday and I’m on the road with a big block Mopar, and I’m about to do 75 miles an hour for 120 miles. My friend Macie has his F-250 Powerstoke I sold him and one of the dealership mechanic’s trailers. I did try to put the Chrysler on the trailer, but I guess an 18’, 2” car won’t fit on a 14’ car trailer. Interesting.

Kinja'd!!!

That’s a piece of wood. Someone is gonna ask.

I chased the diesel on the trip down, and aside from me looking up from halfway through a corner a few times and the car being wicked boaty as I attempted to not die, it was pretty uneventful. When I got to where Hayley lived my sidewalls were scrubbed really hard.

Right as we were getting close, Macie slowed way down next to this road, and the road sign was bent. It made it look like the road we were next to was the one I had to be on, and even though Macie kept going, I thought he had overshot the turn and had to go turn around. I went up the road and a guy with a Nova in the garage said he loved my car, and I figured this was the guy I was supposed to meet. I turn the key off and the car fucking dieseled on me. I’d never had that happen. I bumped the key back over to run and the thing went right back to running. I let it run for a minute and then shut it down. Anyway, that wasn’t where I was supposed to be and drove around aimlessly until I found it.

Kinja'd!!!

Dragging the exhaust, which is going to get taken off anyway. 0 fucks.

The trade went pretty smoothly, so I’ll just skip to getting my new child onto the trailer. The trailer is taller than the one I’m used to, and, in the back, Hayley is lower than my ‘67, which is the last car I put on a trailer.

We pulled the diesel down the hill a little, so that the angle would be a little less. We put the ramps on the trailer down, and took the ramps off another trailer on the property to set on the ramps of out trailer. Then we put planks on those. We got it about halfway up before the belly rubbed (I’ve learned my new daughter loooooves belly rubs).

Kinja'd!!!

Please note that my terrible stance, the nose being that high, is just for loading it onto the trailer, it will get brought back down sooner rather than later.

At this point we got under each trailer ramp with a floor jack and jacked until each ramp was about even with the angle of the trailer and rolled her the rest of the way on.

Kinja'd!!!

Hayley hunkers down for the ride home, while Hunter adjusts to his surroundings. Make no mistake, I was sort of emotional seeing that car go. It’s a great car.

The ride home was fun, with a lot of people sitting sideways in the passenger seat of their respective cars, staring at my new prize. I was pretty proud and if I could’ve thanked everyone who went by who thought my car was cool, I would have.

Kinja'd!!!

Note that registration sticker. Also, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

We stopped for pizza on the way back. It was meh.

Kinja'd!!!

I got home, and despite being beat I tuned into the live broadcast of Hooligan Radio , my car club’s own radio station (does your car club have a radio station?)

About halfway through the broadcast my good friend and DJ Johnny La Rance said that I had bought a new car and that it was the most beautiful car he’d ever seen. I didn’t know it was coming and it really made my day. I went to bed at 1 AM when the show finished, and I’m dragging ass at work today, but I had the energy to write this story for over an hour. Now to just get the energy to stand up.

EDIT: I almost forgot one of the coolest parts. Hayley has this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! decal in the back window. That’s a real place, and one of their biggest attractions is !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Well, the guy I bought it from is the son of the guy who does The Wolfman.

Anybody who had "Coty's new car is another rust-gangrenous VW, because he has a problem", please go up to the window to collect your winnings.

My Falcon's frame rails were galvanized, and the floor panels were sprayed with allegedly anti-rust paint. What's that you say, rust don't give a shit?

Kinja'd!!!

Well, darn.

As a bit of a non sequitur, this post reminded me that I saw a 911SC the other day with the license plate "NEIN H2O." I laughed then had to explain to my wife why it was funny.

I have some fancy-pants new floorboards (for a Mustang) that I'm going to be welding in, but I only finished up the rockers enough to do that on Saturday. Otherwise, the rockers might have tried to break off the front end of the car, which is Bad.

I'd do vanity plates if year of manufacture plates weren't so cool.

I agree. Who knows, someone may recognize it! I'm really excited to see what you have in store for this car. It's a fine example and seems to have had a crap ton of work done to it. Congrats man.

Worse, $3. It's only semi-gangrenous with rust, so the payout took a hit.
