I've never NOT had AWD (owned a 98 Outback the past 8 years of my life... which means it's the only car I've ever owned.) I feel it's time to have some fun. I'm a bit wary of a low, RWD car now that I've moved to Chicago, but I also have PLENTY of snow driving/drifting experience, and happen to also have experience with the miracle that is "snow tires."
Thoughts? Opinions???

With modern technology and a good set of snow tires, most RWD cars do well enough in snow.

Great idea. I've done Michigan life for the last 4 years now with RWD and its glorious. Thats even with last years snowpocalypse or whatever it was called.

Get some snow tires, you'll be fine. My truck is RWD, works just fine with snow tires, and no weight in the back.. If it gets too deep for ground clearance to be a real problem, you should probably get off the road anyways.

I used my car as a plow on chicago burbs streets. This was from the worst blizzard of last year that just so happened while I was in Chicago with the ///m. Michelin alpine pa3, not even agressive winters. A Brz would do just as well if not better.

My FR-S was great in the snow here in Massachusetts with Blizzaks. Never went sideways unintentionally, always felt like I was in complete control. The only time I was scared was when I went around a corner a bit sideways and my girlfriend threatened to hit me.
Only once did I decide not to drive after getting out to the car. But that was partly due to my neighbor who parked very close to me and partly due to my laziness in not wanting to clear the inch of ice on the driveway.

If you're downtown, why do you need a car?
If you're anywhere near the country, good luck when the snow gets 6-ish inches deep.
But really, try it and see how it goes.

You're asking someone on Opposite Lock why they need a car? Lol.
I need a car because I'm a car guy! Autocross! Back roads! Track days! Also I need a vehicle for my travels (yes, I am fully aware that a BRZ is not the "ideal" long-distance cruiser, but it's fine for me.) Also I live in the northern suburbs, but I'm on a major street and juuusssttt next to downtown Evanston, so I don't think I have to worry about DEEP snow other than perhaps initially during a storm if anything.

Yes, I ask because having spent the last two days in Downtown Chicago, I question why anyone who lives near the lake needs to have a car for day-to-day activities. However, as I haven't been to Evanston, it may have different circumstances.

My girlfriend and I just finished a 700 mile loop around New England this weekend. We would usually about two to three hours without stopping between destinations. We took only backroads and state highways so there were lots of fun twisty bits. We were both comfortable (though it would have been nice to have the dual climate control in the BRZ) and not at all wishing we were in something more "refined".
The noise was a bit irritating after awhile. But I bought her a bag of potato chips to keep her quiet.

Lol. Good call.
I plan on adding probably 50-ish lbs of sound deadening to the interior, as well as deleting the sound "enhancing" tube leading to the cabin as apparently that makes a HUGE improvement to interior noise, particularly at higher speeds.
