On my 944, because no one knows what it's for. All I know is that the car has aftermarket cruise control, but that wouldn't be it, would it?
Also, check out the future mods I have planned for the future!
The plan is for it to be a daily/track day/winter warrior, bro.

And lastly, but not so sure about it, an Adjustable RS Cam Gear:

So yeah.

The wire is for a sending unit on the transaxle?

is it melted on the exhaust? Why is that wire there? has to be non-OEM....right?

It powers the hidden lube dispenser in the back seat. Be sure to keep your fluids topped.

It isn't factory so it must be a mod by a previous owner. Hmm, not sure what kind of mod would need a wire to be run under tha car.

It's called the Schorenegen's Fable wire. It connects the sport exhaust dial to the differential and EGR valve. It costs $7593 to replace, and only three are made in any 10-year period.

Maybe for a trans/diff temp sensor?

Aftermarket alarm or stereo. Not factory.

It's definitely not OEM, but I don't think it's melted on; I might have to check then..

It was done by the original owner most likely, I'm the third owner. And I was thinking about how it's exposed to all the elements and such..

I don't think I've got a sensor for that, and the car doesn't have the optional diff. It does have aftermarket cruise control, but I wouldn't think that's it..

I don't think it's got an alarm, it's never been set off by anything, or anyone. But yes, it's not factory.

Well its a transaxle so its a combined diff and trans. Best way is just to follow the wire to each end and see what it's plugged into.

No, I mean I really don't have an LSD in this car. It was an optional extra that this car doesn't have.

Should be able to get one under $10. There are plenty of good guides that can explain how to use one better than i can, theyre pretty simple to use.

Ah okay, thought you were under the impression that your car didnt have a diff at all, not that it just didnt have the LSD.

I've been curious for months now, but nothings gone wrong yet, so I only think about it when I get underneath the car.

Safe enough. It's not going to be anything to do with the brakes unless someone has decided to do some DIY rewiring of the ABS (if so you can drive quite safely without ABS), it's not the steering and none of the wheels are being held on by it. If it's the cruise control it just won't work.
If you do however manage to get killed no responsibility is of course accepted.

Mmmm....I'm gonna say not alarm. Those're usually just run through the firewall. Prob not nitrous, since there'd be more plumbing left over. Maybe a trunk mounted amplifier? Trace it; a job like that (hello exhaust pipe!) chances are it's just wired up straight to the negative terminal

Maybe it's the activation switch for the exterior quilting?

Wires like that are what made my cars interior almost completely burn. Aftermarket alarm.
In your case, follow the cable.

It could well be the cruise control – since older cars often have mechanical speedometers, most aftermarket cruise control systems that I've run across will use their own speed sensor. Usually, this is a magnet and pickup that goes on the propshaft after the gearbox, but with a rear-mounted transaxle, it'd have to go on one of the half-shafts. See if it runs back there.
I really don't like that routing over the exhaust... Any signs of melting?

Too dark to see, I'll have to check later, but since it's been that way since sometime between the original and second owner, nothings gone wrong.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was the aftermarket cruise control. Would you want to tear apart a Porsche just to hide some wires? And who would drive a Porsche in any kind of weather that might damage it?
Early cruise control systems were vacuum operated. As the engine loads/unloads itself, intake manifold pressure changes, and the unit would adjust throttle position to maintain speed. You'd need to have the switches up front with the driver, and with a rear-engined car, all the rest would be at the back. Even if you had an all-electric setup, you'd still need something to connect the switches to whatever moved the throttle.
But you can't know without finding out where it plugs in.

You mean like this?
You say it as if it's a sin. The cars are galvanized from the factory, and it'll be washed at least twice a week, if not more in the winter; I don't see a problem with it at all. With FR 50/50 weight distribution and a good set of tires, I bet it'd perform excellent in snow. I would like to know if there's anything I can do to protect those wires though.

I'm going with aftermarket cruise control. I'll guess that it's going to little sensor on the drive shaft (or maybe axle, depending) that was watching a magnet epoxied onto the shaft to determine relative movement speed so it wouldn't have to be interfaced with any oem parts.

Haha, no, just trying to get in the mindset of someone who would run wires like that. I'd drive it in any weather... I'd just be happy driving a Porsche at all!
As far as protecting the wires, unless you run over something that could tear them off or otherwise damage the insulation, they're probably fine. Weaker points that would be more susceptible to corrosion would be splices and connectors. Splices, if done securely (good solder or solid crimp) should be covered with a properly sized heat-shrink wrap. Connectors get a generous dab of dielectric grease, which should be good for a few years if you don't do water crossings very often.
