Kinja'd!!!

Is music getting shittier, or am I just getting older? I mean, there have always been bad songs out there, but I can't bear to listen to the majority of what's on the radio right now.

Hell, I'm 17 and can't take the stuff that gets played on the radio.

I can say both are true, you are definitely getting older (unless you are suffering from the Benjamin Button Disease) and music does seem to be getting worse, though there are the odd couple songs that are good

The stuff on the radio is usually junk, but there are plenty of good artists out there.

28, and right there with ya. The most I can handle is BBC 6 Music or BBC Radio 4 (which is high brow chat, politics, and the odd comedy series). Thrilling. Almost everything on fM is utter trash.

I think there is still good music around, but pop music is some utter shit these days.

Yeah, it's getting shittier. It's all about popstars pulling their pants off nowadays pretty much.

No, this means you are becoming cultured. Now get a ticket for the symphony and enjoy it.

You already have another essential element: the car.

However I'm not certain if you have the panache to not wear shoes to the symphony. That's open to discussion.

Exactly. Music isn't getting shittier, but radio is. 0 risk, 0 flavor. You'll have to go out of your way to get to the good stuff, but it certainly is there.

you're just getting older. Mass-market radio sucks for the most part. It always has and always will. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was booed off stage on the first show of their first US tour — opening for the monkees. My father in law was at that show - at independence arena here in Charlotte. It was 1967.

Back in 1969, the number one selling single was "Sugar Sugar," by the fucking Archies. Popular music sucks and it always will. Just find something you like and stick to that.

I'm partially with you. I primarily listen to music that is older than I am (early 90s ftw), and yes mainstream radio sucks, but there are still many great artists around. They just tend not to be played on the radio. If you look beyond popular music you will still find some brilliant stuff. So no, music is not getting worse.

Yes, music does seem to be getting much shittier.

I don't even listen to the radio anymore, because I can't stand what's on it. Like even 101 is full of crappy new music. (I hate Mumford and Sons with a passion, and that's all they want to play half the time.) I only use CDs, the internet and my aux jack on my car.

Just taking a look at my playslist, the most recent songs I've got are two of them from late 2013/early 2014. But I think one of the problems is simply how much songs are repeated.

Do what I do, listen to a mp3 device or CDs. That way you can listen to things you don't mind listening to.

I feel that it's not music as a whole that's getting worse, but it's the songs that get played on the radio often that are getting worse. I can barely tolerate most of the music played on the radio here (I'm 17 if it matters), and the "classic" stations are little better. I'm sure the "best of 80s music" is a significantly larger pool than what that lot plays.
