I sold my Jetta earlier today, and received a call from the buyer about a half hour after the sale telling me that the clutch had just gone out. Never in my ownership did I have any trouble with the clutch so I guess it was just bad timing (for him). Probably no way for me to convince the buyer I had no knowledge of the issue beforehand...

Kinja'd!!!

Oh well, on to craigslist to hunt out my new DD.

That's really strange, was it slipping even a small bit before you sold it?

No, only got it to slip (to the point of smelling it) once during my ownership. And that was from a very agressive 1-2 shift with too early application of throttle.

I assume they drove it before purchase. You'd know if a clutch was going out.

Yes, they drove it. No issues.

Don't get me wrong, sold car is sold. I just feel bad because he was a pretty cool guy and it's a shitty situation.

Routine maintenance, used car, and nbd. Enjoy your new cash flow.

I'd like to know just what he did with the clutch. Did he leave your place and start doing burnouts? If he test drove it, and had no complaints, then it's his bad luck.

Back in '99 I sold my '90 300ZXTT with 28k miles on the clock to an attorney who flew out from CA to buy it from me in FL. I told him it had a Stillen chip and exhaust, and an electronic boost controller. Told him not to touch anything and put premium in it. Two days after he drove off I got a call saying he had blown the motor. Implied I had misrepresented the car. I shrugged, said "You shouldn't have either gone cheap on gas or played with the boost controller" and hung up. Car was cherry, everything was working perfectly, but he wanted to blame me after screwing it up. Never heard back from him again.

The tercel i just bought had a slipping clutch for years but is still barely barely driveable... Maybe because my clutch is pre-electronic everything, but they don't usually just "go out." They progressively worsen over time. I find his claim strange. But i have no idea how different wear is on modern clutches.

Noice.

Sold my '95 Neon to a guy a state away that was into them more than I was, and when he left my house spinning tires into 2nd gear, I knew he was going to have a fun ride home

I get a call that night, and he blames ME for the headgasket blowing. First of all, it had been replaced before I got it, I NEVER had any overheating or oil leaking issues with it (water pump went out but that was the worst mechanical failure it ever had), and still he says I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN.... why? Because the radiator cap failed. The guy beat the SHIT out of the car on the 5 hour drive home, and when the cap failed, the car overheated. He kept driving, and the hg blew. And he blames ME for the cap. Not his shit driving style.

Not that I was ever easy on the car, but in all my time with it it never let me down. Except for the water pump. But that was a leak, not an overheat.

That's just how it goes sometimes when buying or selling a beater. The buyer test drove it before buying, no?

And for all you know, the buyer may have done something dumb to damage the car.

So just forget about it and move on.

Yep, forgotten about it now. I sent him a text with the best advice I could think of (check the clutch cable) and never heard back.
