Practicality and enthusiasm for automobiles are like oil and water; they just don't mix together. But there comes a time in our lives as auto enthusiasts when we have no choice but to be practical.

Take this situation for example: you have things you need to pay off and you can't afford to get what you really want to drive. So, instead, you are forced buy something practical and cheap…but you also desire something relatively new. After all, an old car can be quite a headache since there might be this one major problem with the car that you were unaware of when you bought it.

And it just so happens that soon after you buy the car, you need to replace the roof of your house, and all of a sudden the used car that you thought was such a great value needs the A/C compressor replaced costing you thousands of dollars.

Here is what it comes down to. Y ou just don't have the bandwidth or energy to deal with maintenance problems on an older car. Also, it's nice to have something newer.

When you think of a car that's newer that's also cheap and reliable you would normally picture a Civic, Elantra or a Focus. But how about this?

A 2012 VW Jetta with a 2 year, 24K mile warranty…for…

$13,500!

This was sitting at the local VW dealer waiting to be purchased. Actually, someone did buy a car exactly like this one while I was test driving!

This great deal that I found by accident is only a 2 year old car that was driven by just one person during a lease. The car feels practically brand new and it has a warranty.

Having driven both the Elantra and the Civic recently, I can honestly say that you literally fall asleep when driving them because you're just so bored . It's like sitting in a class with a professor that's droning on about differential calculus and you can barely keep you eyes open. Then you have to pinch yourself to stay awake.

Granted, the base model Jetta is not terribly exciting but it is more of a driver's car. The handling is way better. The Jetta has a better ride and feels more solid. And guess what? No need to worry about reliability because you have the warranty.

The interior quality is better and from a practicality standpoint, there's way more room in the car. The trunk is humongous. One downside to this particular model was that it was way underpowered. But then again, the car does only cost $13,500.

The other downside is that there really are no bells and whistles to speak of. But it's so cheap…and oh, did I mention it has a warranty ? So with no worries for a couple of years, you can cruise around in a highly practical, comfortable, albeit underpowered Jetta for $13.5K.

And remember, it's only a temporary purchase until you can buy what you really want. If you're in the market for something like this, the Jetta is definitely worth a look.

I agree 100%. The Jetta does feel like a more substantial drive than the other two. And, although it is "cheapened" it is the basic german feeling cars like the original C-Class gave. The more you see it and drive it, the more you appreciate it, and I can say that by driving a 2011 2.5 with an Auto for 2 years.

Awesome - have you had any maintenance problems with it?

We have taken it to every service to the dealership and they ALWAYS come up with something thats broken. But in all honesty, its just a corrupt way of making you spend on the repairs. My father knows this and every time they tell them "Well, this sensor broke and needs replacing" he tells them "How the hell can a car break down so early?" . The person in charge stutters: "Uh, yeah, but you have the warranty! The car will be ready tomorrow". My father: "Yeah, thought so".

But it has taken us from our town, Tampico Tamaulipas (Which is south 400 miles from the border) all the way to Las Vegas! It didn't break a sweat.
