Here's the thing; if a person can afford a Model S, clearly they're rather well off financially. So they obviously can afford a second car.

So here's what they probably do, or at least what I'd do:

Use Model S as DD and for trips 200 miles or less.

Kinja'd!!!

Then have a second car for road trips. My choice would be an Escalade.

Kinja'd!!!

Or, you know, most people who own Model S-es probably fly if they travel anyway. So they don't need anything more then a car for driving around town.

I sat in a Tesla at the mall in Indianapolis, which happened to have a Tesla store inside of it. The build quality was amazing. Being such a small company, I expected some chintzy bits here and there. Nope. That thing felt solid as hell. The stereo was amazing, too. I'd love to have one.

For a long range vehicle, I'd get something anti-Tesla as well. Just because. I'd also get a "Coal Keeps the Lights On" speciality plate for a Tesla if I had one. Being coal country here in Kentucky, that's one of the most popular special order license plates.

Agreed, they can also afford gas and to drive a nicer and more enjoyable main car.

I think what purterbs people is that the hypetrain pushes it as the perfect replacement for all cars when it has an undeniable massive limitation.

It's a cool luxury item or a transportation supplement rather than a do it all ICE replacement.

I'd run a Panamera 4S as my touring car if I had a Tesla as my town car (and way more money).

I like the Model S too much, that's why my second car has a V8.

Sigh. I don't think you really understand what the commute for people in the less densely populated areas is.

200 miles of range isn't a "road trip once a year" deal for a lot of people. It's a once a week or even every day commute. Let's say you live 45 miles out of town. First you drop the kids off at school. That's a 10 mile drive there and 10 miles back. Then you drive to work. 45 miles. After work you drive 5 miles to the gym. Then maybe you do another 5 miles to the grocery store. Then it's 45 miles home, 10 miles to pick up the kids and 10 miles back home. That's 145 miles every day. If you have to do anything even slightly different, like drop a friend off who lives in the other direction, or go to a mall on the other side of town, you start to run into the limit pretty quickly.

And that's not the craziest commute. I know people who live 60 miles from where they work.

Even if you have the money to have multiple cars, if your daily commute is that long, you'd have to ask yourself why you have a car you don't even drive.

I commute 50 miles a day (ok 46 miles really) one way, and live in Central Il. I think you replied to the wrong person.

pshaw. ICE cars are for peons. If you're REALLY ballin, you just buy a new tesla every 200 miles.

I think you're right. Most the owners have a second car so the range is no prob

It's just enjoyable to have one car that can do it all. An Audi RS7 for example.. It basically does everything the Telsa does - cept you can drive it clear across the country anytime you like. You can drive up to Tahoe - over to LA - all the way to Chicago - whatever.

It's true you might not do this but people like the idea that you could.. It's ultimate capability vs. limited capability and feel good electric kudos. I know which one I would pick..

Actually, from what I have gathered, quite a number of Model S owners have never bought a car more than thirty grand, and pinched and scraped to afford a Tesla.
