"We want something reliable and a good value." They sounded offended when I suggested the current Accord. Whatever not my money.

Why would they be offended? that or an altima is the default answer to that question.

Since it's not your money why not 9-5?

They replied "a Honda?" like I was a communist.

Midsize, Value, Reliability, really just comes down to the Japanese mid-size crowd, namely, Altima, Accord, Camry.
All 3 of those currently on sale don't look bad (I think the Camry looks great but the
2015
update looks terrible). And they all go point a to b without breaking down alot. I don't see why they would be offended. Maybe say Altima or Camry next time lol

I just had a family member call me and tell me his 09 accord finally had a problem. 230k miles and he had to replace the rear left caliber due to the parking brake sticking. Still on original clutch and battery.

Why 9-5? Sounds like a terrible suggestion for a single mother.

Yes. I would love to force these "nationalists" into a basic econ course.

Why terrible?

Doesn't surprise me, I'm guessing they go to the Fusion? Doesn't take a genius to see the Accord is the best choice out of the current offerings. Value wise at least.

Oh man I hate people who are car nationalist. "Buy American" or "Don't Buy Honda" are the worst. One of my friend says to never buy a volvo because they are all built in China. Another friend straight up called me homosexual and I should cut my balls off for looking at a Civic for my next car...
I need new car friends.

Availability, cost to own, reliability, depreciation.

Availability isn't that bad, I doubt it must be all that expensive since most things mechanical are GM, reliability is boring and depreciation is a good thing, 2011 Saab 9-5 with 20k miles, 17k boom.

For as much as I like them, and almost bought one... Don't think I would suggest them to anyone. It's an enthusiast's car that's quirky and rare. The Saab parts availability remains uncertain. Even though it's GM not all parts are interchangeable. No. Not for a hardworking single mother that wants a new vehicle to last her a long time.

Then probably not, Japanese is the best choice. But seeing her reaction, you should have offered her a Lada.

I checked subaru's off my list when they went all CVT transmissions.

I really like the 6 but, like everyone else it seems, forget that it even exists until someone else mentions it.

Mazda6 is a fantastic mid-sized sedan. Amazing handling and suspension and is available with manual trans in the Touring trim.

Not saying it's a bad car, I like it. Accord is just more refined, better value, less depreciation.

It's a smart looking car that drives nicely. The 4cyl manual Sport would be the one I'd choose if I were in the market for an inexpensive substantial sedan. Even though it looks more expensive than it is, the Accord makes less sense if they are looking to spend over $30k. I'd consider the Fusion. Personally, I would never ever consider the Camry or Altima.

Thankfully we still get the manual 2.5L in Canada

Offended? Then why the hell did they ask for your input? Evidently they've already made up their mind...
