As a musician, I've looked back at the history of music and wondered where we would be if there had been no Bach, no Beethoven, no Stravinsky. I think that somebody else would have taken up the role of those composers, and while we might be in a slightly different place, it would be very similar. I wonder, though, where we would be without Burt Rutan.

I know it's a well designed airplane, but just the general look of the plane, with two fuselages joined only by a high-aspect wing section and no joined tailplane, is disconcerting.
I know it works, I mean hell, it's a Burt Rutan joint. Still...

I am super excited about it. Much like I am super excited about new Ferrari models. Wicked cool, sexy ideas, nut jiggelingly fun aaaannnnddd completely out of reach for me. But yeah I am excited other people get to snatch my biggest childhood dream from me. I love Burt and Friends!

Such a great analogy.

Honestly, who else could pull off those sideburns?
Seriously though, aviation would be a different place without him. The guy was truly one of the last cowboys. There are still a few left but in today's society of risk adverse decision makers, he was one of the few people that regularly said "fuck it, let's try it."

I am. The Transporter, another commenter, and I had an excellent conversation yesterday about the future of space flight.

"Fuck it, let's try it" is how I like to sum up the '50s and '60s jet aviation. But somehow, I think a genius like Rutan always knew it would work. That's a fantastic picture, btw.

FUCK YES!
When SpaceShipOne did it's inaugural spaceflight I took over the dorm's common room so I could watch in on the big screen, and angrily growled at anyone who dared go within 10 feet of the controls. The concept that average people (or at least average people with a good income) will be able to GO INTO FUCKING SPACE is HUGE!!

Completely out of reach for you now, but in another few decades who knows. Consider just how fast flight has evolved. We went from "man can't fly" to supersonic in 34 years. Supersonic to space in 14 years. Space to THE FUCKING MOON in 8 years. Fast forward a few decades from now and pops into suborbital space may become the routine express route for intercontinental travel

I have a good hope that I'll be an astronaut before I die. Fingers crossed.
