Wish I had a more interesting post to make. I'm pretty sure I failed my math test today. Of course it started to pour down on me while I walked back to my apartment. On the plus side I go home Friday for fall break. This means wrenching on the NA gets to happen. Oh and I think this picture is pretty sweet.

Just maybe. I have a test Wednesday and research paper due next Wednesday but I can hand it in Friday so I don't have to worry about it over break. Really looking forward to some wrenching time in my dad's garage chilling to music.

Nah, trains burning coal are where "rolling coal" came from.

It's probably from a longer exposure time on the camera, makes quite a bit look not quite right.

It's not. Oil burners' smoke comes out that black when under the right conditions. Normally, they'll run a bit more inefficient to achieve this effect when they're showing off. I think this was one of those times.

Oil burners and coal burners could get pretty black. Especially when they're being worked. The steam is taking heat out of the fire box pretty fast under load, so they're generally putting fuel in as fast as they can. That get's smokey.

Smoke is fluid. The exposure time of this photo was obviously a little long-ish. Note the blurring of the connecting rods on the locomotive. Same effect as a long exposure photo of running water.

TBH, part of me was thinking the same thing about the running gear. Despite the movement, I have never seen it look that blurry at speed before.

Same. It looks like someone took a swirl/blur filter over it. It's probably just a product of exposure time, but I can't help that it still looks fake.
